A combat follows, in which the Brownies triumph; but Dragonfel invokes the assistance of Vulcan, and there comes an earthquake that brings down the palace walls. Meanwhile a volcano has gone into erup tion, and in the natural excitement of the moment Dragon fel contrives to escape with Queen Titania to his mines. The Brownies are left in the path of the swift descending lava. Prince Florimel appeals to Euphrosyne to match her might against that of Vulcan, and the course of the lava is diverted, and the Brownies are saved. Then they renew the search for Queen Titania. Day dawns, and Prince Florimel urges his companions to still continue their search, though the mystic powers of the Brownies vanish with the night. Dragonfel, knowing of this weakness in them, entraps them and sets them to work in the mines.
