Apprehending that a failure would occur by not receiv-
ing from the board of supervisors of the several counties,
the aggregate amount of assessment for the year 1838, in
consequence of the defect in the act approved April 6th,
relative to the duties of supervisors, I addressed a circu-
lar to each of the county Treasurers, requiring them to
transmit to this office the aggregate amount of assess-
ment for the year 1837, which was complied with, (ex-
cepting the counties of Wayne, Barry and Ottawa.) on
which returns the apportionment was made, as will ap-
pear on the other side, and it appears from these circum-
stances that no state tax will be raised for the past year
without further legislation.
