Dedicatory Address.

WERE I a Poet like Moore, a Dramatist like Colman, a Novelist or Historian, like Sir Walter Scott, and could I confer either fame, respect, or honor; I should, on the present occasion, be ready to inscribe these Pages to a Gentleman, from whom I have frequently received very flattering marks of kind attention, and the most signal proofs of liberal regard. But to speak here in his praise, would only be echoing the public voice, and might run the chance of displeasing him; for his prime wish is, to do good without having it talked about. I shall, therefore, forbear even the mention of his name, and solicit him only to honor this work by his perusal, and to bestow on it that degree of patronage, which he, and the Public, may indulgently think it entitled to.

HENRY LEE.
