The two houses of the general assembly met in grand committee for the purpose of receiving, sorting and counting the votes for general officers, given in at the annual election held on the first Wednesday in April, 1890, and for declaring the result and inducting the officers elected into office.

His excellency, Herbert W. Ladd, governor, in the chair.

The ballots were delivered to the Grand Committee by the secretary of state.

On motion the following select committee was appointed to assort and count the votes and declare the result of said election, viz.:

Providence County.-Lucius F. C. Garvin, Fayette E. Bartlett, Joseph L. Brown, Andrew J. Anthony,

Edward L. Gannon, Frank W. Tillinghast, Samuel S. Stone.

Newport County.-Thomas C. Watson, George M. Seabury, Christopher E. Champlin, Isaac Brown, Chas. Acton Ives.

Bristol County.-George T. Baker, James C. Church, Benjamin Drown, Samuel D. Wardwell, William B. Nichols.

Kent County.-John A. Chase, James H. Fish, Nathan D. Pierce, Jr., Henry D. Heydon, William A. Hanaford.

Washington County.-Charles J. Greene, Z. Herbert Gardner, Martin G. Parks, Stephen T. Browning, Paul M. Barber.

The secretary and clerks of the two houses added.

The grand committee took a recess until 3 o'clock p. m., and on reassembling, the following report was presented, viz. :

REPORT.

The committee appointed to count the votes for general officers beg leave to submit the following report:

That the whole number of electors voting for governor is 44,417, and that 22,209 votes are necessary for a choice.

That 21,298 electors voted for John W. Davis of Pawtucket.

That 20,547 electors voted for Herbert W. Ladd of Providence.

That 752 electors voted for Arnold B. Chace of Lincoln.

That 1,820 electors voted for John H. Larry of Providence.

They further report that there is no election of gov

That the whole number of electors voting for lieutenant-governor is 40,820, and that 20,411 votes are necessary for a choice.

That 18,789 electors voted for Daniel G. Littlefield of Lincoln.

That 19,512 electors voted for William T. C. Wardwell of Bristol.

That 701 electors voted for Franklin Metcalf of Charlestown.

That 1,818 electors voted for Joshua C. Brown of Newport.

They further report that there is no election of lieutenant governor.

That the whole number of electors voting for secretary of state is 40,611, and that 20,306 votes are necessary for a choice.

That 19,179 electors voted for Samuel H. Cross of Westerly.

That 18,933 electors voted for Edwin D. McGuinness of Providence.

That 1,755 electors voted for John W. Money of Charlestown.

That 744 electors voted for Harmon S. Babcock of East Providence.

They further report that there is no election of secretary of state.

That the whole number of electors voting for attor ney general is 41,460, and that 20,731 votes are necessary for a choice.

That 20,001 electors voted for Ziba O. Slocum of Providence.

That 19,705 electors voted for Horatio Rogers of Providence.

That 1,754 electors voted for John T. Blodgett of Providence.

They further report that there is no election of attorney general.

That the whole number of electors voting for general treasurer is 40,317, and that 20,159 votes are necessary for a choice.

That 19,155 electors voted for John G. Perry of South Kingstown.

That 18,613 electors voted for Samuel Clark of Lincoln.

That 1,764 electors voted for Jason P. Hazard of West Greenwich.

That 785 electors voted for Charles E. Carpenter of Providence.

They further report that there is no election of gen

eral treasurer.

The foregoing report was read and received.

On motion the grand committee proceeded to elect by ballot a governor, with the following result, viz.:

Whole number of ballots cast, 106; necessary for a choice, 54, of which John W. Davis received 57, Herbert W. Ladd received 49; and John W. Davis of Pawtucket, was declared elected governor.

The oath of office was administered to the governorelect by the secretary of state.

The grand committee proceeded to elect by ballot a lieutenant-governor, with the following result, viz. :

Whole number of ballots cast, 105; necessary for a choice, 53, of which William T. C. Wardwell received 57, Daniel G. Littlefield received 48; and William T. C. Wardwell of Bristol, was declared elected lieutenantgovernor.

The oath of office was administered to the lieutenantgovernor elect by the secretary of state.

The grand committee proceeded to elect by ballot a secretary of state, with the following result, viz.:

Whole number of ballots cast, 106; necessary for a choice, 54, of which Edwin D. McGuinness received 59, Samuel H. Cross received 47; and Edwin D. McGuinness of Providence, was declared elected secretary of state.

The oath of office was administered to the secretary of state elect by the governor.

The grand committee proceeded to elect by ballot an attorney-general, with the following result, viz.:

Whole number of ballots cast, 105; necessary for a choice, 53; of which Ziba O. Slocum received 60, Horatio Rogers received 45; and Ziba O. Slocum of Providence, was declared elected attorney-general.

The oath of office was administered to the attorneygeneral elect by the governor.

The grand committee proceeded to elect by ballot a general treasurer, with the following result, viz.:

Whole number of ballots cast, 105; necessary for a choice, 53, of which John G. Perry received 58, Samuel Clark received 47; and John G. Perry of South Kingstown, was declared elected general treasurer.

The oath of office was administered to the general treasurer elect by the governor.

Proclamation of the several officers elected was made in accordance with ancient usage.

IN SENATE, May 27, 1890. The governor announced the following appointments, viz.:

Aids to the Commander-in-chief.-Howard Smith of Newport, Patrick E. Hayes of Pawtucket, William Von Gottschalk of Lincoln, Dalton E. Young of Newport, William J. Nichols and Vernum A. Taylor of Providence.

Executive Secretary to the Governor. - Claude J. Farnsworth of Pawtucket.

IN GRAND COMMITTEE, May 28, 1890.

The following state officers were elected:

State Auditor.-Elisha W. Bucklin, of Pawtucket. Inspector of Beef and Pork.-Henry M. Kimball, of Providence.
