Whereas, There is now pending before this general assembly a claim of the enlisted men of the 4th Reg. 1890. R. I. Vols., for money wrongfully deducted from their pay while in the service of the United States, and

Whereas, Recognizing the justice of said claims, the legislature of this state has taken action at different times to have this matter properly adjusted with the United States government, in order that these men may receive the money so long justly due them and unjustly withheld from them, and

Whereas, This matter has been suspended in consequence of a disagreement between the second auditor and the comptroller of the treasury department, and

Whereas, There are good reasons to believe that if this matter can be properly presented before the comptroller of the treasury, with the evidence which can be produced to sustain the claim, that a favorable decision. might be obtained, therefore,

Resolved, That his excellency, the governor, be and he hereby is authorized and requested to appoint two commissioners who shall, if possible, obtain the consent of the treasury department at Washington to allow a re-hearing on the claim of the enlisted men of the 4th Regt., R. I. Vols., for the money wrongfully deducted from their pay while in the service of the United States, and to present and prosecute said claim to a successful termination if possible, and report their action and doings to the next January session of this general assembly.

Also Resolved, That our senators and representatives in congress be and they are hereby requested, with their influence to assist said commissioners in said matter; and the state auditor is hereby authorized to draw his order on the state treasurer for such sums of money from time to time as may be necessary to defray the expenses incurred by said commissioners in adjusting said claims, whenever vouchers for the same shall have been approved by the governor.

RESOLUTION of final adjournment.

Resolved, the honorable senate concurring herein: That when this general assembly adjourns on Wednes day next, it adjourns to meet at the state house in Providence on the third Tuesday in January, 1891, at 11 o'clock A. M.

No. 54. Passed June 20, 1890.

RESOLUTION of adjournment of the general assembly.

Resolved, That when this general assembly adjourns on Friday, June 20, A. D. 1890, it adjourns to meet at the state house, in Providence, on the third Tuesday of January, A. D. 1891, at eleven o'clock in the forenoon.
