COTTON.-The news from the country is very favourable; there has in consequence been a revived inquiry for Cotton, particularly Brazil descriptions. The business done in this market has not been considerable, on account of the holders asking higher prices. The export demand has entirely ceased for the present; 170 Babias and Maranams were sold at 224. a 224d.; 50 Pernams 2s. 14d.; 70 Grenadas 2046. a 21d.; 74 Barbadoes 17 d. a 20 d.; small parcels Surinams 22ğd, a 2s. 1d.; Trinidad 1718. a 183d.; Jamaicas 17d. a 1848.; common West India 1848. a 214d.; and Boweds 183d. The whole, with the exception of the Pernams, were taken for home consumption; about 1500 Surats and 1700 Bengals have arrived since our last. The business done in Cottons last week at Liverpool has been very extensive.

COFFEE.The quantity of Coffee brought forward by public sale last week was rather extensive, consisting of 1528 casks and 1227 bags: the prices of the Duth descriptions were a shade higher; the Jamaica qualities declined Is. a 2. per cwt. Surinam Coffee is now sold in this market with the same allowance as foreign, 24 per cent. discount, that colony having been given up to Holland; several parcels, in last week's sales, fine ordinary 70s. The public sales consisted of 143 casks and 157 bags Dutch Coffee, chiefly ordinary middling, which sold at 72-, 6d, and 73s, if so small a sale might be taken as a criterion of the market currency, the prices were 2s. lower,

IRISH PROVISIONS, &c.--There is very little good Beef or Pork remaining in our market; the late prices are fully supported. There is no variation in Bacon. The prices of Butter are little varied; the trade, however, evince a greater disposition to purchase at our quotations.

HEMP, FLAX, AND TALLOW.-There has been more business doing lately in Hemp and in Flax.-Tallow has lately been heavy, but on Saturday and Monday there appears a considerable revival in the request; the prices are a shade higher,

INDIGO The prices are entirely nominal, on account of the sale at the India Hoose. About half of the quantity declared has been got through; the prices are as yet very considerably under the last sale, and a great proportion has been taken in for the Proprie tors, on account of the languid demand.

RICE.—The demand for Carolina Rice continues; 400 bags newly landed have been sold by private contract for immediate shipping.

TOBACCO.-There is little variation in Tobacco; the demand for Virginia descriptions has continued so limited, that purchases may be made a shade lower; the only con siderable parcel of Marylands sold lately, we believe about 120 or 130 hhds, of ordinary quality; the stock of the latter is trivial in comparison with the quantity of other descriptions in the warehouses.

SPICES-Pepper continues heavy, and the limited purchases made are a shade lower : some Jamaica Ginger realised 131. 12s. a 141. 2s. last week. Cloves, Cinnamon, Cassia, continue in request; the other descriptions of Spices are without any variation.

OILS-Continue to advance; on account of the extensive purchases of Seed. Linseed Oils are held at very high prices.

RUM, &c.-We stated the great advance in the prices of Jamaica Rum on Tuesday se'nnight; higher prices continued to be paid and very extensive transactions sook place; towards the close of last week the purchasers turned their attention to Leewards, which had been comparatively neglected; the prices immediately advanced, 20ths under, which had been held at 2s. 7d, advanced to 2s. 10d. a 2s. 11d, being nearly in proportion to the rise in Jamaicas. Monday and Tuesday there was not the same briskness, on account of the news from Ireland; the advance is however fully supported; a rise of 6d. per gallan took place in British Spirits.-Brandy and Geneva have been in considerable request, in consequence of the advance in the other description of Spirits; the prices are 28. a 3¢. per gallon higher.

PUBLIC SALE OF PROVISIONS,—600 firkins Waterford Butter, 1st. 81s, to 83.-2d. 759. 6d. to 78%,-3ds. G8,-100 firkins Cork, 3ds. 72s. to 73s.-50 firkim, Carlow, 1st. 91s.-80 firkins, Limerick, 1st. 78s.-20 firkins Newry (last sea-on's), 508.-11 hds. Hams, 29s, to 29s. 6d.-140 sides dried Bacon, 3s. 5d. to 3s. 7d, per stone-450 bales of Bacon, 49s, to 52s. and 39s, to 40s.

COAL-A Correspondent informs us, that the high price of Coal is to be attributed to a combination amongst the Colliers at Newcastle. He says, it is a mutual understanding, that only a certain number of ships shall arrive every week at the London Market; and that it is customary to keep ships at Newcastle for six weeks together, in order that only a certain quantity of Coal shall be at market. There is another practice amongst the Coal Merchants in London, which shows that a similar combination exists; and as the Lord Mayor is desirous of correcting abuses, we would recommend to his Lordship to attend at the Coal Exchange some market-day, and he will see some practices that require correction. It is notorious, that the price of Coal is regulated by a few opulent men, who make a practice never to purchase until about ten minutes before the bell rings for the close of the market. We are informed, that the whole of the purchases are made in that time; and that the price of Coal is regulated by a few great buyers, instead of open competition; consequently combination exists, to the great injury of the public, and the fair trader.
