GENERAL OBSERVATIONS.

COFFEE. This article has fully recovered from its dullness of last week, and prices have in some instances advanced. The demand is however, more for the Coloury descriptions, which (when good flavoured) are paid with great prices, and in this day's Public Sales these qualities were bought in eagerly. The other descriptions are likewise enquired after, and upon the whole prices, are somewhat looking up-it is, however, improbable that any great rise will take place here unless preceded by an improvement in the Continental Markets: but at the same time it should be remarked that our Stock at present is much decreased, and that the present holders will become more reluctant in selling at the present prices.

SUGAR. The demand for this article has been very limited for the Home Trade as well as Export, and the sales very inconsiderable. The alteration in the duty on Raw Sugars for Home Consumption, having become probable, has put a stand to any business heing done, until this decision takes place, which is likely to be on or before the 5th of Sept. 1816. Meanwhile it is very unlikely much will be done, and any sales made must, of course, be under the current market prices, as a decline is confidentially anticipated by many of the buyers.

TOBACCO.-The Virginia Market remains very heavy, and there is very little doing in this article; some arrivals of new Virginia have come in this week, and a few more are expected; but very little of old are looked for; the prices of which are not expected lower. For new there is at present no demaud. Marylands are getting scarce and much enquired for, and it is not likely that prices of old will decline this Autumn, Brazil Leaf no more in the Market, Brazil Roll very flat.
