Vision of the holy waters.

[graphic]

FTERWARD he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters a issued out from underb the threshold of the house eastward : for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under, from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar. 2 Then brought he me out of the way of the gate northward, and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh eastward; and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side. 3 And when the man c that had the line in his hand went forth

eastward, he measured a thousand

cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the 1 waters were to the ancles. 4 Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters ; the waters were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through ; the waters were to the loins. 5. Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters 2 to swim in, a river d that could not be passed over. 6 *s And he said unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen this f Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the brink of the river. 7 Now when I had returned, behold, at the 3 bank of the river were very many trees e on the one side and on the other. 8 Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into f the 4 desert, and go into the sea; which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed. And it shall come to pass, that every thing that liveth, g which moveth, whithersoever the 5 rivers shall come, shall live : and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; h and every thi .# shall live whither the river cometh. 10 And it shall come to pass, that the fishers i shall stand upon it from En-gedi even unto En-eglaim; they shall be a place to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great k Sea, exceeding l many. 11 But the miry places thereof and the marshes thereof 6 shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt.m. 12 And by the river upon the n bank thereof, on this side and on

CHAPTER I. 1 Jehoiakim's captivity. 3 Ashpenaz taketh Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah ; 17 Their excellency ??? Myzsdø77.

N the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Jodah came a Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon

unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his

god. 3 of And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children b of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes; 4. Children in whom was no ble: mish, but well-favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom o might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. 5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine i which he drank: So nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king. 6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah : o onto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; c and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego. *Is But Daniel j". in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion d of the o: meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he o: not defile himself. 9 Now God had brought Daniel

meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces 2 worse liking than the children which are of your 8 sort then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king. 11 Then said Daniel to 4 Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hamaniah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us 5 pulse to eat, and water to

Fink. 13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat; and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. 14 So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten ays. 15. And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which had eat the portion of the king's meat. 16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse. 17 °s As for these four children God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom : and 6 Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. 18 Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchsbrought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king communed with them ; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, therefore stood they before the king. 20 And in fall matters of wisdom 7 and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them

ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm. 21 And Daniel continued g even unto the first year of king Cyrus. HAPTER II. 1 Nebuchadnezzar forgetteth his dream : 14 It is revealed to Daniel. 31 The dream, and interpretation thereof. A. in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith a his spirit was troubled and his sleep brake from him. 2. Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astroloers, and the sorcerers, and the haldeans, for to show the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king. 3 And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream. 4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriac, O king, live for ever : tell thy servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation. 5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, the thing is gone from me : if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be 1 cut in pieces, c and your houses d shall be made a dunghill. But e if ye show the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts, and 2 rewards, and great honour: therefore show me the dream and the interpretation thereof. 7 They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation of it. 8 The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would 3 gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me. But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you ; for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and If shall know that ye can show me the i thereof. 10 * The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can show the king's matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean. 11 And it is a rare thing that the Wing requireth, and there is none

other that can show it before the king, except g : the gods, whose dwelling h is not with flesh. 12 For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all i the wise men of Babylon. 13 And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain ; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain. 14"| Then Daniel 4 answered with counsel and wisdom to Arior.h the 5 captain of the king's guard, which was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon: 15 He answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel, 16 Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would show the king the interpretation. 17. Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hamaniah, Mishael, and Azariah his companions : 18 That k they would desire mercies 6 of the God of heaven concerning this secret, that 7 Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 "| Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision.l Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 20 Daniel answered and said.m. Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom n and might are his : 21. And he changeth the times o and the seasons: he p removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he q

giveth wisdom, unto the wise, and

knowledge to them that know understanding. 22 He revealeth r the deep and secret things: he knoweth's what is in the darkness, and the light t dwelleth with him. 23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee : for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter. 24 of Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will show unto the king the interpretation. & 25 Then Arioch brought in Daniel
