2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer 1 with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice e to the LORD.

3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me himf whom I name unto thee.

4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his 2 coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?g

5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify h yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

6 And it came to pass when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, i and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him.

7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not k on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: forl the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the 3 outward appearance,m but the LORD looketh on the heart.n

8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.

9 Then Jesse made 4 Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.

10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.

11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and behold, he o keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, send and fetch him: for we will not sit 5 down till he come hither.

12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, p and withal 6 of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.

4 T And there went out a cham-i Ge.37.14. pion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath of Gath,

5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was 3 armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a 4 target of brass between his shoulders.

7 And the staff c of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron and one bearing a shield went before him.

8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? Am not I a Philistine, and ye servants & to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and

serve us.

10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

12 Now David was the son f of that Ephrathite of Beth-lehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight g sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.

13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the first-born, and next unto him, Abinadab; and the third, Shammah.

14 And David was the youngest : and the three eldest followed Saul. 15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed h his father's sheep at Beth-lehem.

16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

17 And Jesse said unto David his

son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren:

18 And carry these ten 5 cheeses unto the captain of 6 their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.

19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

Jonathan loveth David.

CHAPTER XVIII.

1 Jonathan loveth David. 5 Saul envieth his praise.

ND it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul a of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan b loved him as his own c soul.

2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.

3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

4 And Jonathan stripped himself d of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and 1 behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.

6 And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the 2 Philistine, that e the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with 9 in

struments of music.

7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath ƒ slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

8 And Saul was very wroth, g and the saying 4 displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? h

9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

10 T And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit i from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied k in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin 7 in Saul's hand.

11 And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided m out of his presence twice.

12 ¶ And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.
