he is, (at least, not with external Worship,) but there only where he appears in his glorious Majefty; viz. ordinarily in Heaven, and extraordinarily elsewhere; as hath been proved in the first Propofition: And as we are not obliged to worship JESUS CHRIST in the Water of Baptifm, with external Adoration, though he be really there in refpect of all that is adorable in him; because he doth not discover the leaft Beam of his Glory there, nor appear in the Water of Baptism any more than in other Waters, as hath been proved in the fecond Propofition: Even fo we are not obliged to worship JESUS CHRIST in the Hoft with external Adoration, although he be there in refpect of his Manhood too: Because JESUS CHRIST doth not discover any Beam of his Glory there; nór doth he appear in the confecrated Hofts, any more than in those that are not confecrated: For no Man can diftinguifh the one from the other. And as for his Manhood, which is pretended to be there invifibly; I fay that there is no fenfible Mark of its Prefence, and confequently nothing that obligeth us to external Worship, for the fame Reafon as is already alledged. For if the invifible Prefence of the Godhead, divine Perfon, and divine Attributes of JESUS CHRIST, (which are of themselves adorable,) do not oblige us to external Worfhip, in the Water of Baptifm; why fhould the Manhood of JESUS CHRIST, (which is not of itself adorable,) oblige us to external Adoration, though it

were

were in the Hoft: It being there only, (as they fay) invifibly ? In a Word; They muft fhew us the Difparity, and tell us the Reafon why they are not obliged to adore JESUS CHRIST with external Worship, in the Water of Baptifm; (though he be really there prefent, in refpect of all that is adorable in him, viz. in refpect of his Godhead, his divine Perfon, and his divine Attributes; ) and yet are obliged to worship JESUS CHRIST in the Hoft, with an external Worship Though nothing renders him more adorable there, than in the Water of Baptifm.

:

6. To this the Jefuit St. Rigant (one of the moft learned of his Order,) Anfwers, That although there be nothing in the confecrated Hoft that renders him more adorable than in the Water of Baptifm; yet there is fomething in the Hoft which obligeth us to external Worship, which is not in the Water of Baptifm. Because, faith he, the Manhood of JESUS CHRIST is in the Hoft, and is there inftead of a Ray of Glory : And GOD will be adored in all Places where the Manhood perfonally united to the Godhead, is prefent. But in the Water of Baptifm JESUS CHRIST difcovers no Beam of his Glory; and his Manhood (which is Equivalent to a Ray of Glory,) is not there.

7. To this I reply, That the Rays or Beams of Glory which oblige us to external Adoration in a certain Place, must be fenfibly in that Place. And therefore, fince the Manhood of JESUS CHRIST, which is pretended

tended and fuppofed to be really present in the Hoft, is neither vifible nor fenfible; it cannot be equivalent to a Beam of Glory. To which I add, that as the Godhead and divine Perfon of JESUS CHRIST, which are equally prefent in the Water of Baptifm, and in the Hoft; do not oblige us to external Worship, for this only Reafon, viz. Becaufe they do not difcover any Ray of their Glory there: So neither doth the Manhood of JESUS CHRIST (pretended and fuppofed to be really present in the Hoft,) oblige us to external Adoration, for this only Reafon, viz. because it appears not there, nor discovers any Ray of its Glory. Laftly, I affirm, that (by the very Doctrine and Practice of the Romish Church it felf,) we are not obliged to adore JESUS CHRIST in all Places where his Manhood is. Becaufe (as the Romi Doctors confefs,) we are not obliged to adore JESUS CHRIST in that Hoft which the Prieft hath newly eaten, and whofe Accidents are not yet destroyed; nor in that Hoft which is locked up in the Cupboard that is on the Altar; nor in that Hoft which a Prieft carries under his Cloak to a fick Perfon in the Country.

8. To this the fame Jefuit answers, That although the Glory of Chrift's Manhood appears not to our bodily Eyes, yet it appears to the Eyes of our Soul, viz. to our Faith. For the greatest Glory of Chrift's Manhood confifts in its being perfonally united to the Godhead, and in being fuftained in a peculi

ar

ar Manner by the Word. Suppose then, fays he, that JESUS CHRIST be in the Hoft; we are fure that it is perfonally united to the Godhead: And confequently the Glory of Chrift's Manhood (which confifts in this perfonal Union,) doth certainly appear to our Faith; which is fufficient to oblige us to an external Adoration of JESUS CHRIST in the Hoft.

9. To this I reply, That there is a twofold Glory of GOD and of JESUS CHRIST, OF of his Manhood: viz. The one Effential, Internal, and hid from our Senses; the other Accidental, External, and apparent to our Senfes. The effential and internal Glory of GOD, which is hid from our Senfes, confifts in the Eminence of his Perfections, which are, to be Infinite, Almighty, moft Wife, &c. And the accidental and external Glory of GOD, which appears to our Senfes, confifts in fome miraculous and extraordinary Effect which is fenfible: As when GOD caufed a Bush to burn, without being consumed; when he pronounced his Oracles from above the Mercy-feat; and when (being made Man, and having manifefted himself in the Flesh) he commanded the Winds and the Waves, caft out Devils, raised the Dead, &c. But I affirm, that we are not obliged to Worship GOD with an external Adoration in all Places where he is, in his effential and internal Glory only; although it appears to our Faith: Because GOD being every-where, with his effential and internal Glory; we fhould be oblig'd to Worship him with an external Ado

ration in Trees, in Beafts, yea, and in Devils too: Which is abfurd. But we are only obliged to Worship GOD with external Worship, in all Places where he makes his effential and internal Glory appear by fome accidental and external Glory; viz. by fome miraculous or extraordinary Effect, which is fenfible and equivalent to a Ray of Glory: As appears by what is faid in the firft Propofition. In like Manner, the perfonal Union of the Godhead and Manhood being an effential Glory of JESUS CHRIST, and an internal Glory of his Manhood, wholly hid from our Senfes; doth not oblige us to the external Adoration of JESUS CHRIST, although it certainly appears to our Faith: Except it be accompanied with an external and fenfible Glory. For if the effential and internal Glory of the Godhead and divine Perfon of JESUS CHRIST, which appear equally to our Faith, in the Water of Baptifm, do not oblige us to an external Adoration of JESUS CHRIST; except it be accompanied with an accidental, external, and fenfible Glory: Why fhould the internal Glory of Chrift's Manhood, which is infinitely beneath the internal and effential Glory of the Godhead, and appears prefent to the Faith of thofe of the Romish Church; oblige them to the external Adoraration of JESUS CHRIST, if it be feperated from all external and fenfible Glory? To this I add, That (according to the Doctrine and Practice of the Romish Church) we are not obliged to adore JESUS CHRIST with exter

nal.
