alone. All the decisions of the Indiana Supreme Court and the Indiana Appellate Court published to January 1st, 1894, have been examined in annotating these statutes. In the annotation of the constitution of the United States the references come down to and include Volume 146, U. S. Reports. This revision presents the first attempt in this state to thoroughly annotate the federal and state constitutions with full references to the decisions of both the federal and state courts. In the citation of cases the following abbreviations are used: For Blackford's Reports, Blkf.; Indiana Supreme Court Reports, Ind., and Indiana Appellate Court Reports, App. Elliott's Supplement is referred to in the notes by Ell. Supp. The first volume contains the United States Constitution and the Indiana Constitution, and all of the matter heretofore embraced in the first part of the Revised Statutes of 1881, so far as it is now in force, together with the amendments and additions thereto. All the remaining statutes of a general and permanent nature are contained in Volumes 2 and 3. At the close of the third volume will be found a list of the private, local and temporary acts passed by the general assembly of 1881, and the subsequent sessions. Recognizing the peculiar importance of a proper index for a statute, special care has been taken to make this complete and thorough. It is prepared and inserted as a separate index to Volumes 1 and 2, and a complete index of the entire work in Volume 3. The task of compiling, revising and annotating the statutes of the state was undertaken in the confident belief that such a work was needed. The magnitude of the undertaking was fully understood, and it was realized that to make the project a success, correctness and thoroughness were essential. The author has labored earnestly and carefully to make this work both accurate and complete, but it is offered to the profession with the full knowledge that it is impossible to incorporate so large a body of matter in one work without mistakes.
