and said it fell towards her. Upon this, I looked very blank 48, and, observing the concern 49 of the whole table, began to consider 50 myself, with some confusion 51, as a person 52 that had brought a disaster 53 upon 54 the family. The lady, however, recovering herself 55 after a little space, said to her husband, with a sigh 56, "My dear, misfortunes 57 never come singly."58 My friend, I found, acted 59 but 60 an under 61 part62 at his table; and, being a man of more good-nature 63 than understanding 64, thinks 65 himself obliged 66 to fall in with 67 all the passions 68 and humours 69 of his yoke-fellow.70 "Do not you remember, child," says she, "that the pigeon-house 71 fell 72 the very73 afternoon that 74 our careless 75 wench 76 spilt 77 the salt upon the table?" Yes, my dear," says he; and the next post brought us the account of the battle of Almanza." reader may guess at 78 the figure 79 I made 80 after having done all this mischief.82 I dispatched 83 my dinner as I could, with my usual taciturnity 85, when, to my utter confusion, the lady seeing me quitting. 86 my knife and fork, and laying them across 87 one another upon my plate 88, desired me that I would humour 89 her so far as 90 to take them out of that figure91, and place them side by side.92 What the absurdity 93 was which I had committed 94,

I did not know, but I suppose 95 there was some tradition ary 96 superstition in it; and therefore, in 97 obedience 98 to 99 the lady of the house, I disposed of100 my knife and fork in two parallel 101 lines, which is the figure I shall always lay them in for 102 the future 103, though I do not know any reason for it. It is not difficult for a man to see that a person has conceived 104 an aversion 105 to 106 him. For my own part 107, I quickly found 108 by 109 the lady's looks, that she regarded me as a very odd 110 kind of fellow, with an unfortunate aspect 111; for which reason, I took my leave 112 immediately after dinner, and withdrew 113 to my own lodgings. Upon my return 114 home, I fell 115 into a profound contemplation 116 on 117 the evils that attend 118 these superstitious 119 follies 120 of mankind; how they subject 121 us to the imaginary 122 afflictions 123, and additional 124 sorrows 125, that do not properly 126 come within our lot.127

As if the natural calamities 128 of life were not sufficient for it, we turn 129 the most indifferent 130 circumstances into misfortunes, and suffer as much from trifling 131 accidents 132 as from real evil. I have known the shooting 133 of a star 134 spoil 135 a night's rest 136; and have seen a man in love 137 grow pale 138, and lose his appetite, upon 139 the plucking 140 of a merry-thought.141 A screech-owl142 at midnight has 95 vermuthen. 96 überliefert. 97 aus. 98 Willfährigkeit. gegen.

alarmed 143 a family more than a band of robbers 144; nay, the voice of a cricket 145 has struck 146 more terror 147 than the roaring 148 of a lion. There is nothing so inconsiderable 149, which may not appear dreadful to an imagination that is filled with omens 150 and prognostics 151: a rusty nail or a crooked 152 pin shoot up 153 into 154 prodigies.155 I remember I was once in a mixed assembly, that was full of noise and mirth, when on a sudden 156 an old lady unluckily 157 observed there were thirteen of us 158 in company. This remark struck 159 a panic 160 terror into several who were present 161, insomuch 162 that one or two of the ladies were going to leave the room. I know but one way of fortifying 163 my soul against these gloomy 164 presages 165 and terrors of mind; and that is, by securing 166 to myself the friendship and protection 167 of that Being who dis poses 168 of 169 events 170 and governs futurity.171 He sees, at 172 one view 173, the whole thread 174 of my existence 175, -not only that part of it which I have already passed through 176, but that which runs forward 177 into all the depths of eternity. When I lay me down to sleep, I recommend myself to his care 178,--when I awake 179 I give myself up 180 to His direction. 181 Amidst all the evils that threaten 182 I will look up1 me, 183 to Him for 184 help; and question 185 not but 186 He will either avert 187 them, or turn 188 them to my advantage.189 Though I know neither

XX.-ON STORIES OF GHOSTS.1

13

Ar my coming to London it was some time before I could settle myself3 in a house to my liking, I was forced to quit my first lodgings by reason of an officious landlady, that would be asking me every morning how I slept. I then fell into an honest family, and lived very happily for above a week, when my landlord, who was a jolly 10 goodnatured 11 man, took it into his head 12 that I wanted company, and therefore would frequently come into my chamber14 to keep 15 me from being alone. This I bore for two or three days, but telling me one day that he was afraid I was melancholy 16, I thought it was high time for me to be gone 17, and accordingly took 18 new lodgings that very night. About a week after, I found my jolly landlord, who, as I said before, was an honest hearty 19 man, had put 20 me into an advertisement 21 of 22 the Daily Courrant, in 23 the following words: "Whereas, a melancholy man left his lodgings on Thursday last in 24 the afternoon, and was afterwards seen going to Islington; if any one can give notice 25 of him to R. B., fishmonger26 in the Strand, he shall be very well rewarded 27 for his pains."28 190 bekümmert. 191 192 um. unterlassen. 193 trösten. 194 stüßen, 1 Geistergeschichte. 2ehe. 3 sich niederlassen. nach. 5 Wunsch, m. As I am the best man in the world to keep my own counsel 29, and my landlord, the fishmonger, not knowing my name, this incident 30 of my life was never discovered to 31 this 32 day. I am now settled 33 with 34 a widow woman, who has a great many children, and complies 35 with 36 my humour 37 in everything. I do not remember that we have exchanged 38 a word together these five years. My coffee comes into my chamber every morning without my asking for 39 it; if I want fire, I point 40 to 41 my chimney; if water, to my basin 42; upon which my landlady nods 43, as much as to say 44, she takes 45 my meaning 46, and immediately obeys 47 my signals. 48 She has likewise modelled 49 her family so well, that when her little boy offers 50 to pull 51 me by the coat, or prattle 52 in my face, his eldest sister immediately calls him off53, and bids 54 him not to disturb 55 the gentleman. At my first entering into the family, I was troubled 56 with the 57 civility of their rising up to 58 me every time I came into the room; but my landlady observing that upon 59 these occasions I always cried Pish,' ,"60 and went out again, has forbidden 61 62 such ceremony 63 to be used in the house; so that at present I walk into the kitchen or parlour without being taken notice of 64, or giving 65 any interruption 66 to 67 the business or discourse 68 of the family. The maid will 69 ask her mistress, though I am by 70, whether the gentleman is ready71 to go
