ORR says in her preface: "Such letters of Mr. Browning's as appear, whole or in part, in the present volume, have been in most cases given to me by the persons to whom they were addressed, or copied by Miss Browning from the originals under her care; but I owe to the daughter of the Rev. W. J. Fox- Mrs. Bridell-Foxthose written to her father and to Miss Flower; the two interesting extracts from her father's correspondence with herself and Mr. Browning's note to Mr. Robertson. For my general material I have been largely indebted to Miss Browning. Her memory was the only existing record of her brother's boyhood and youth. It has been to me an unfailing as well as always accessible authority for that subsequent period of his life which I could only know in disconnected facts or his own fragmentary reminiscences. It is less true, indeed, to say that she has greatly helped me in writing this short biography than that without her help it could never have been undertaken." Mrs. Sutherland Orr's biography of Robert Browning is a welcome book, and tells the story of his life with good feeling and kindly interpretation, and is published with the assistance of all the family. It is mainly a personal biography, and is written very close to the subject, in the simplest manner pos sible. Mrs. Orr has avoided all disagreeable things, and tells a true story, without exaggeration, and without drawing attention to herself. Mrs. Orr has had to build up her story out of slight materials, and has succeeded in putting into them the personality of Browning, because she knew him intimately and was able to understand him. . . . It has been prepared with, great care and fidelity and supplies all that the public is ever likely to know about Browning. We could have wished that the poet been more vividly presented, that the portrait had been stronger, that there had not been so many reserves, but she gives a true impression of the man and is always kindly appreciative. There was a kind of poetic justice in selecting a woman for the office of biographer. Browning was woman's friend. He was most indebted to women for his inspiration, and they have been most active in appreciation of his poetry. THE ANDOVER REVIEW VOLUME XVI.-PUBLISHED MONTHLY.-NUMBER XCII.
