The Precepts and Doctrine of Jesus Christ.

SECTION VI.

TAKE heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them; otherwise you have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.* But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth. When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut the door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think they shall be heard for their much speaking. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil : for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. For if ye forgive

men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

SECTION VII.

LAY not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.* Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.† Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. ‡ Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. §

SECTION VIII.

BEWARE of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves: ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man which built his house upon a rock and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the wind blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not for it was founded upon a rock.
