"This is a simply marvelous compilation which in its title completely invests the order of its imperative." Thus begins a contemporary review of this book in The Law Times for September 24, 1892. Books of this type were written fairly frequently in England during the nineteenth century. They are in many ways that century's counterpart to the modern innovation of "oral histories." Both serve an invaluable insight into helping to underst and better the events of the past.

William George Thorpe was born on March 1, 1829, educated at Queen's College, Cambridge, and studied at the Middle Temple and was called to the Bar in 1877.
