building material is to be counted as a very substantial resource of Nebraska: Avery, in Sarpy County, shipped out 400 cars of brick; Wahoo, Saunders County, 43 cars of stone; Valley, in Douglas County, 1,563 cars of stone; Blue Springs, Gage County, 1,018 cars of stone; Meadow, Sarpy county, 416 cars of sand and gravel; Fremont 628 cars of sand and gravel; Nehawka, Cass County, 3,400 cars of stone; Louisville, Cass County, 46 cars of stone, 115 cars of fire clay, 2,310 cars of sand and gravel. These do not represent all the shipments of building material by any means; but take the shipments from Louisville, alone, and allowing 35 cars to a train, there went out of that station during 1907 sixty-six trains of sand and gravel.

Method of Gathering Crop Statistics

METHOD OF GATHERING CROP STATISTICS.

This Bureau has now a list of about 700 "live" correspondents, scattered throughout the ninety-one counties of Nebraska. There are many more to whom the crop estimate blanks are sent, but who do not answer regularly or promptly. This season the blanks were in the following form:

SEPTEMBER CROP ESTIMATE BLANK SENT OUT AUGUST 20: TO CROP CORRESPONDENTS BUREAU OF STATISTICS:

In sending out this first request for crop estimates on 1908 yield the Deputy Commissioner desires to thank most sincerely the men who are doing this work for Nebraska. Our book (No. 12) of last year was in such demand the Bureau could have SOLD may thousands of copies more than were printed, so valuable was it considered FOR THE STATE. The demand reflected great credit on evry crop correspondent; and it is significant that from no source did we hear a criticism of your work. The figures everywhere were regarded as accurate as they could be made.

LET US KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK THIS YEAR-and soon Nebraska will take the position she is entitled to as one of the half dozen really great agricultural states, in every sense.

In estimating the average yield per acre in your vicinity of the various crops enumerated below, base the estimate upon yields within a fair radius of your place. The estimate should not, of course, be based on yields of best farms only, but on the entire harvested area you are familiar with. Acreage abandoned prior to harvest for any reason should not be included.

PLEASE RETURN ESTIMATE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, because it takes several weeks to tabulate the returns. Yours very truly, JOHN J. RYDER, Deputy Commissioner.
