COLLEGII REGII ABERDONENSIS,

JACOBUS 4, REX SCOTORUM.

JAMES the fourth, of happie memorie, undertooke upon him and and his successours, kings of Scotland, the patrocinie and protectioun of the famous uniuersitie and colledge of Aberdene, whence the same was intituled the Kings Colledge. He ratified and enlairged also the prerogatiues and priuiledges therof, recommending the lyke future cair therof to his royal

successours.

Accordinglie, JAMES the sext, of blessed memorie, not only tooke upon him the lyke patrocinie of the said colledge and uniuersitie, confirmed and ratified the priuiledges therof, but also, out of his royall bountie, greatlie augmented the rents and reuenewes of the same, by confirming in parliament the mortification of the deanrie of Aberdene therto, subchantorie of Methlik, and granting the same to remaine with the said colledge and uniuersitie for euer.

And, in anno 1641, his royal sonne and successour, King Charles, gaue to the said colledge the two pairts of the bishoprik of Aberdene for euer; which was in lyk manner confirmed in publict parliament.

WILLIAM ELPHINSTOUN, BISHOP OF ABERDENE,

FOUNDATOR.

Bishop William Elphinstoun founded the uniuersitie of Aberdene, with the varietie of professours, maisters, and members therof; caused build the magnifick edifices of the colledge, church, professours houses, and gairdins therin; mortified unto the same the rents and reuenewes wheron they might then competentlie liue for the time; richlie also adorned and endowed the said colledge with costlie ornaments, bells, jewells, tapestrie, and the lyk; and founded twelf bursers of philosophie to be educat in ther cours of philosophie, and pass the degree of maister of airts therin.

For help of the rents of the said colledge and uniuersitie, Mr. Duncan Sherar, parson of Clat, and Mr. James Reidheuch did contribute likewise at that same time ther aid, the said Mr. James by mortifieing in particular the ferm fewes and dewties of Colyne and Andait.

B. Gauin Dumbar, Bishop of Aberdene.

Bishop Gauin Dumbar. What was left as yet throw the deathe of B. William Elphinstoun imperfect, either in the manner of the foundation of this famous uniuersitie or in the edifices of the colledge and houses of the seuerall professours therin, he did perfect, and put on the coapstone theron.

B. William Stewart, Bishop of Aberdene.

Bishop William Stewart built the librarie hous, and with a number of bookes furnisht the same; as also he built the jewell or charterhous, and vestrie or chapter hous.

Principall Walter Stewart also procured the benefice of Methlik to be added to the said colledge: Of whome great hopes were conceaued of doing much more good to the same, if in the 36 yeer of his age he had not bene preuented by deathe.

Mr. Robert Maitland, Deane of Aberdene.

He mortified the deanrie of Aberdene to the said uniuersitie and members therof, anno 1579.

Doctor Alexander Reid, Doctor of Medicin.

He gaue for the help of the bursers ther table and mantainance twelue hundrith pundis in stock, a good number of bookes also to the librarie, with two globes and some mathematicall instruments; and at his death, anno 1041, bequeathed two hundrith punds sterling, the yeerlie profit of one hundrith pund to come to the help of the grammariers stipend, and the other for help of the regents their stipends. As also, he left his whole medicin bookes to the colledge librarie.

Mr. Andro Straquhan, Dr. and Professour of Diuinitie.

He left and mortified his whole bookes to the library of the said colledge, anno 1634.

Mr. James Watt, Minister of Snaith in Yorkshyre.

He mortified, anno 1623, some riggs of land, lying on the east and west side of the city of Old Aberdeen, for the maintainance of one bursar; which, in case of misapplication, is to be applied for the use of the poor in the said burgh by the provost and baillies theirof.

Mr. Alexander Blakhall, Humanist in Southwark.

He sent from London threttine fair volumes for a help to the librarie of the said colledge, with other four of lesse volume, making in all 17.

Likewise he sent therafter, anno 1643, eleuen punds starling to be disponed for the good of the colledge, as the principall should think good.

And at his death, he left in the hands of Mr. John Turing, at London, the half of his bookes to the colledge, and fiftie punds starling to be peyit after his wifes decease, anno 1648.

Mr. Thomas Mercer, burges of Aberdene.

He gave a hundreth punds worth of books (wheron ar his name in gold letters), for a help to the librarie of the said colledge.

Sir Francis Gordoun, agent for his Maiestie in Pole.

He gave, at his returne to Scotland, anno 1642, for the help of the librarie of the colledge, after threttie yeers peregrination, 42 fair volumes, most pairt physicall, anno 1643.

Sir Thomas Burnet of Leyes, Knight Baronet.

He mortified, anno 1648, four crofts besyd the Crabstane for the erection and intertainment of three bursers in the kings colledge of Aberdene, to be presented by the lairds in all time coming.

Alexander Hamiltoun, Generall of the Artillerie.

He gifted to the colledge, for help of the librarie therof, three rair and fair volumes upon Ezechiell and visions therof, sett forth by Baptista Villalpandus, 1648.

Doctor John Forbes, Laird of Corse.

He gifted to the colledge, for help of the librarie therin, Augustin's workes in 6 volumes, and Gratian's decretall.

James, Lord Crighton, Vicount of Frendraught.

He gave to the colledge, for help of the librarie therof, a fair illuminated Ortellius, and Speid's great mapps of England.

Doctor William Guild, Principall of the Kings Colledge.

Anno 1641, he procured from his majestie, Charles the first, (whose chaplane he was) to the said colledge, the two pairts of the bishoprik of Aberdene, estimat to four thousand marks or thairby yearlie. He adorned and caused paint the two chambers belonging to the principall, gaue the brasen hearse in the hall, and the twelue Sybills that adorne the said comon hall, &c.
