introduce such a system into a congregation. On the other hand, as soon as such efforts are made, they will, in great measure, be crowned with success. When a church is reported as contributing nothing to purposes of general benevolence, we generally expect to hear that, at least, only insufficient effort has been made by the pastor to instruct the people in their duty. When a minister has long had the religious instruction of a church in his hands, and, in the end, is starved away from it, we generally think that it is his own fault. No grace of the Divine Spirit is more cultivatible than Christian beneficence.

THE THEOLOGICAL ECLECTIC.

A SERIES of Theological Papers chiefly selected from the periodical and other literature of Great Britain, France, Germany and Holland.

Published Monthly at $1 per annum.

This Journal, the first number of which was issued in May last, has been warmly welcomed by ministers and intelligent laymen of all evangelical denominations in every part of the loyal States. The following statements will show the new field it professes to occupy:

1. THE THEOLOGICAL ECLECTIC is designed to consist of choice theological papers, selected for the most part from the books, and also from some of the more important journals of Great Britain and the Continent, such as the British and Foreign Evangelical Review, British Quarterly Review, Journal of Sacred Literature, Christian Observer, Christian Remembrancer, the North British, London, Edinburgh and London Quarterly Reviews, Revue Chrétienne, Archives du Christianisme, Theologische Studien und Kritiken, Zeitschrift für die historische Theologie, Jahrbücher für deutsche Theologie, Allgemeine Kirchenzeitung, Protestantische Monatsblätter, Nieuwe Jaarboeken voor Wetenschappelijke Theologie, and Kerkhistorisch Archief.

2. In the selection of these papers, special prominence will be given to the vital question of the age, viz.: a supernatural and authoritative revelation from a personal and living God. Still the Theological Eclectic will not be restricted to this class of topics, but will contain articles on Biblical exposition, preaching, the lives of eminent theologians, and indeed on any subject in theology, not denominational, on which articles distinguished for their thought-developing power, and promising to aid ministers in their weekly preparation for the pulpit, are found. It is expected that these papers will be of such a character that intelligent laymen will read them with interest, but no attempt will be made to render this periodical popular in the common acceptation of the term.

3. The theological position represented in these papers will be the common Christianity of the Evangelical Churches. A wide latitude, however, will be allowed in the expression of individual opinion on subordinate questions.

4. The Theological Eclectic will be edited by Rev. George E. Day, Professor of Biblical Literature in Lane Seminary, with the privilege of consultation on any doubtful points, with BISHOP MCILVAINE, DRS. THOMPSON, NAST, and LYND, and REV. H. M. STORRS, of the Protestant Episcopal, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, and Congregational Churches.

5. This periodical will appear in monthly numbers, of not less than 24 pages each, and be printed in the style, as to form, type, and paper, of the North American Review. The subscription price for the year is $1.00 per annum, always strictly in advance. The back numbers from the beginning of the year, in May, can be supplied.
