In the year 1818 Jacob Gideon published, in an octavo form, with some additional matter, the first edition of the Federalist which contained all the numbers of the work as revised by their respective authors. That edition was printed from a duodecimo copy, in two volumes, in which the authorship of the respective numbers was designated, and some corrections were made, by Mr. Madison himself. The duodecimo copy was then deposited in the Washington Library, where it may still be seen. In 1831, another edition of the Federalist was issued from the press of Messrs. Way & Gideon, with the addition of a Table of Contents and, for the first time, of an Alphabetical Index. Both those editions having long since been out of print, another, which should combine the typographical convenience of the edition of 1818, with the additional matter of that of 1831, seemed to be called for by the general voice. The present edition of our great constitutional classic will, it is hoped, gratify the presumed wish of the public. Some improvements have been made in the Index.

Washington, September, 1845.
