ately replace it or pay the cost of replacing it. If it be one of a set, it must be replaced or the whole set paid for. In the latter case the remaining volumes shall become the property of the person so paying for them, as soon as another set shall have been procured to take the place of that which has been rendered imperfect. RULE 12. Any person who shall injure or deface a book, or suffer it to be injured or defaced, while in his possession, by tearing or turning down its leaves, writing in it or otherwise, beyond a reasonable wear, may, at the discretion of the Librarian, be fined not more than the full value of the book injured, or may be required to pay for the whole set to which it may belong, as provided by Rule 11 in the case of books lost. RULE 13. Any person remaining indebted to the Library for fines, subscriptions or other dues, one month after being notified of such indebtedness, shall forfeit the privilege of drawing books, until such indebtedness is paid. RULE 14. The Library and Reading Room shall be free for purposes of reading and reference, to all persons who shall conform to the rules and regulations of the same. RULE 15. Readers are invited to enter, in a book which shall be kept for that purpose, the title of any book not in the Library, which they may desire to use, or may deem deserving of a place on the shelves. RULE 16. At the beginning of each month, the Librarian shall ascertain by an examination of the issue-cards what books, if any, are being kept out beyond time, and notify the borrowers of their delinquency. Valuable books shall be sent for, the delinquent being chargeable with all expense incurred therefor. RULE 17. Smoking and lounging in the Library or Reading Room are forbidden. No person shall remain in the Library or Reading Room with his hat on or coat off, nor put his feet opon the table, chairs, or other furniture, nor shall any loud or bois terous conversation be carried on in the Library Room. In the Reading Room all conversation is strictly forbidden. RULE 18. Any subscriber abusing the privileges of the Library, by unbecoming conduct, or the violation of any of its regulations, or by intentional defacement of a book or periodical, by writing in it, cutting it, or otherwise, shall be immediately reported to the Committee on Library and Reading Room, who may suspend such person from his privileges as a subscriber, reporting their action to the Board. The Librarian shall eject from the rooms any person flagrantly violating these regulations. RULE 19. Any or all of these rules and regulations may be repealed or altered by a majority of the whole Board of Managers, at any regular meeting, or at any special meeting called for the purpose.
