From the foregoing statistics, it will be noticed that there is a decrease of one, in the number of buildings. This is owing to the fact, that the building previously used for a colored school at Baden, has been abandoned. The increase of two hundred and ninety seats is due to the erection of a two-room building on Parsons street, and to additional provisions for the accommodation of pupils at No. 3 and No. 12 Colored schools. The total number of seats, if distributed to meet the requirements in different portions of the city, and if the number belonging at any given time was never greater than the average number belonging for the year, would be sufficient to accommodate an annual enrollment of about 60,000 pupils. This calculation is based upon the fact that only a little over two-thirds of the pupils enrolled are belonging, on an average, at any one time. Such distribution, however, is impossible; and besides, the actual number belonging at a given time often far exceeds the average number belonging for the year. Additions to many of the centrally located school buildings will soon be needed, to meet the demands in those localities.

The item, "Assistants in the High School," does not include the Assistants in the Branch High Schools; nor does the item, "Pupils in the High School," include the enrollment, number belonging, and average daily attendance of pupils in the Branch High Schools. During the preceding year, the Branch High

Schools were abolished by adding to the course of study for the district schools, the branches previously included in the first year of the High School course-thus creating for the district schools a ninth grade. During the present year, however, by action of the Board, the ninth grade classes again became part of the High School, and were placed under the management and control of the principal of the same. There were formerly five schools in which the pupils of the so-called ninth grade were taught; but upon the restoration of this grade to the High School, the classes were consolidated, and all the pupils were assigned to the Polytechnic and Franklin school buildings. The items from which the statistics of the Branch High schools are compiled, were not separated from those of the district schools, and hence are not included in the statistical tables of the High School. The average number of teachers employed in the Branch High schools was nineteen. The average number of pupils belonging in these schools was 413; while the average number belonging in the Central High school was 379,-thus making the total average number belonging to the High School 792.

The kindergartens constitute a part of the district schools; therefore, all items relating to enrollment, attendance, number belonging, number remaining at close of the year, number of cases of tardiness, etc., in the district schools, include the statisties for the kintergarten.

The increase of teachers in the day-schools for the past sixteen years may be seen in the following

In the above exhibit it will be noticed that the decrease in the number of teachers is 14. The increase in the kindergarten over the previous year, as shown by comparison of statistics, was 43 teachers. This number added to the 14 given in the above table, shows a decrease of 57 teachers in the day schools, exclusive of the kindergartens; while the actual number of pupils belonging, exclusive of those in the kindergarten, was much greater than for the preceding year. This large decrease was brought about mostly by the introduction of German-English teachers, and partly by the withdrawal of the teachers technically known as 66 extras from such schools as, by their quota of pupils, are entitled to more teachers than required by the number of rooms.

It must be remembered that of the large number of teachers

given for the year (953 in the day schools), 101 are assistants in the kindergartens, who teach only one-half day and receive small salaries. Deducting the kindergarten teachers (156) from the total number for the year, there remains 797 as the corps of teachers in the Normal, High, and District schools.

The applicants examined" were persons qualifying for the position of principal of district schools, assistant in the High school, German-English assistant, German teacher, kindergarten teacher, or assistant in the colored schools. The "persons not graduating from the Normal school," who received appointments during the year, are filling such positions only as are mentioned above.

No examination of applicants for the position of English assistant in the district schools, (except for colored teachers), has been held since August, 1877.

The following table shows the number of days the schools were in session, the number of days pupils were in attendance, and the number of cases of tardiness:

The total enrollment of pupils in the day-schools is 51,241. The total number of cases of tardiness is 23,312, or only forty six cases to 100 pupils enrolled.
