Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1842,

BY ELIAS NASON,

In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of Massachusetts.

Press of GEO. C. RAND & Co.

No. 3 Cornhill, Boston.

PREFACE.

IN teaching vocal music in his school, the Compiler of this work has for a long time felt the want of a selection of moral and religious songs, adapted to the tastes and circumstances of his pupils; and, as exercises in singing have now become very general in our seminaries of learning, it is believed that other teachers have felt the need of a similar work.

The Compiler is not aware that any collection of sacred songs has hitherto been made with special reference to the wants in question; and the design of the present volume is to meet the deficiency.

It is hoped that it may prove acceptable to those teachers who have introduced vocal music into their course of instruction, and, also, that it may have a tendency to promote the interest now so generally taken in this most desirable and refining branch of education.

NEWBURYPORT, January, 1842.
