PREFACE.

THE Tenth Annual Volume of the Legal Directory, materially en larged, is presented to the public as a tried and trustworthy guide for the transaction of any legal business throughout the United States and Canada.

To those not familiar with the Directory, we would state that its object is to aid professional or business men in transacting business in the various sections of our widely extended country, by furnishing— A List of able and trustworthy Attorneys in the United States, Dominion of Canada, and Europe; A concise yet accurate Synopsis of the Laws of each State and Territory, and of Canada, relative to the Collection of Debts, Execution and Acknowledgment of Deeds and Wills, Taking of Depositions, Insolvent Law and Assignments, Descent of Property, Interest, Tax Law, Mortgages, Claims against Estates, etc.; Times and Places of holding the Federal and State Courts; the Names of one or more Banks or Bankers in the places where they are located.

In the preparation of this volume every page has been carefully revised or rewritten, and no labor or expense has been spared to make the Directory correct in every particular. That portion relating to the laws of the different States has been prepared by the well-known and able Attorneys whose names appear at the head of their respective compila tions, and whose professional standing is a sufficient guaranty of the cor rectness of their work.

We would call the attention of our patrons to our Synopsis of the Laws concerning Jurisdiction and Practice of the District and Circuit Courts of the United States. It has been prepared with great care, and we feel confident that it cannot fail to prove of the highest practical value to all desiring an accurate and comprehensive summary of these laws.

The List of Attorneys is compiled from information obtained by correspondence with more than twenty-four thousand Cashiers or Presidents of Banks, Bankers, or leading Merchants, during the past ten years. Having visited nearly all the principal cities in the country during the past season, we have been enabled to verify the information previously obtained concerning the Attorneys in the places adjoining, as well as the

places visited. For the information of parties having business at places not given in our list of attorneys, reference is made to the note at the head of the Index of Attorneys.

As heretofore, the Terms of the State Courts have been prepared by our correspondents in the different States, while the List of Officials, Terms of, and places of holding the Federal Courts have been furnished by the Clerks of the United States District Courts, and may be relied upon as being accurate in every particular.

It has been our aim to compress the greatest amount of information possible in the smallest space, to prevent the work being cumbersome. Additional information, however, has been demanded each year by our patrons, and the Directory has gradually increased in size from 130 pages in 1870, till it now contains 914 pages of finely printed matter, equivalent to fully 2,500 pages of the usual style of legal publications.

Our sincere and hearty thanks are due to the eminent members of the bar who have prepared the Synopsis of the Laws, etc., for the Directory, and to the Clerks of the different United States Courts, for information furnished.

We shall consider it a personal favor if those discovering any errors or omissions, however trivial, will inform us of them, so that corrections may be made for future editions. Any additional information desired by our patrons, which we can furnish, will be cheerfully given. The annual publication of the Directory will be continued.

NOTICE.

Parties corresponding with attorneys named in the work should ALWAYS sign themselves "Subscribers to Hubbell's Legal Directory." Should any attorney fail to give prompt attention to correspondence or business intrusted to his care, the Editor desires the patrons of the work to inform him promptly of such neglect, that another name may be substituted in future editions.
