This work, according to Mr. Swainson, was probably one of the very first attempts to represent animals by woodcuts. He terms it " a most curious and exceedingly rare book."

It is one of the scarcest books relating to the history of America. This edition contains more than the first; the book of Naufragios y Infortunios, and the Conquest of Peru by Xerez. A copy sold for 181. 7s. 6d. at the Condé Sale.

Palissy, a potter by trade, born about 1514, was the first modern writer who asserted that fossil shells were real shells that had been deposited by a deluge. He is much praised by Buffon, Fontenelle, and others.
