truth in the inward parts: and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly.

7 Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8 Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness: that the bones which Thou hast broken may rejoice. 9 Turn Thy face from my sins and put out all my misdeeds.

Io Make me a clean heart, O God: and renew a right spirit within me.

II Cast me not away from Thy presence: and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.

12 O give me the comfort of Thy help again: and stablish me with Thy free Spirit.

13 Then shall I teach Thy ways unto the wicked: and sinners shall be converted unto Thee.

14 Deliver me from

blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou that art the God of my health and my tongue shall sing of Thy righteous

ness.

15 Thou shalt open my lips, O Lord: and my mouth shall shew Thy praise.

16 For Thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it Thee: but Thou delightest not in burnt-offerings.

17 The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit: broken and contrite heart, O God, shalt Thou not despise.

18 O be favourable and gracious unto Sion: build Thou the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then shalt Thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with the burnt-offerings and oblations: then shall they offer young bullocks upon Thine altar.

The other Penitential Psalms were appointed to be said after the Miserere in Lent at the various hours, according to the use of Sarum. Thus at Lauds, Psalm vi.; at Prime, Psalm xxxii.; at Terce, Psalm xxxviii., at Nones Psalm cii. ; at Vespers, Psalm cxxx.; and at Compline, Psalm cxliii. They will be found at the commencement of Section IV. At Sext, Psalm lxiii. was said after the Miserere.

. Lord, hear our prayer:

R. And let our cry come unto Thee.

. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

LORD, our heavenly Father, Almighty and Everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; Defend us in the same with Thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings may be ordered by Thy governance, to do always that is righteous in Thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ALMIGHTY Lord, and everlasting God, vouchsafe, we beseech thee, to direct, sanctify, and govern, both our hearts and bodies, in the ways of Thy laws, and in the works of Thy commandments; that through Thy most mighty protection, both here and ever, we may be preserved in body and soul; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

O

LORD Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, Who at the First hour of the day wast brought before Pontius Pilate. Thou Who, the judge of all men, didst yet endure the severest doom, we beseech Thee by that judgment to be merciful to us miserable sinners when at the last dreadful day we stand before Thee, Who livest and reignest God for ever and ever. Amen. [Sarum Encheiridion.]

Here occasional prayers may be added.

. The Lord be with you. Ry. And with thy spirit. V. Let us bless the Lord. Ry. Thanks be to God.

In Eastertide.-Alleluia.

This hymn is said daily through the year, save from Maundy Thursday to Low Sunday, when all the hymns are omitted in the Offices.

HYMN. Nunc Sancte nobis Spiritus.

COME, Holy Ghost, Who ever One
Art with the Father and the Son;
Come, Holy Ghost, our souls possess
With Thy full flood of holiness.

In word, and deed, by heart and tongue,
With all our powers, Thy praise be sung;
May love enwrap our mortal frame,
And others catch the living flame.

Almighty Father, hear our cry,

Through Jesus Christ our Lord most High,
Who, with the Holy Ghost and Thee,
Doth live and reign eternally. Amen.

Then let the Reader say the Antiphon.*

Antiphon.—O let thy loving mercies come unto me that I may live.

PSALM CXIX.

33 TEACH me, O Lord, the way of Thy statutes: and I shall keep it unto the end.

34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep Thy law: yea, I shall keep it with my whole heart.

35 Make me to go in the path of Thy commandments: for therein is my desire.

36 Incline my heart unto Thy testimonies: and not to covetousness.

37 O turn away mine eyes lest they behold vanity and quicken Thou me in Thy way.

38 O stablish Thy word

in Thy servant: that I may fear Thee.

39 Take away the rebuke that I am afraid of: for Thy judgments are good.

40 Behold, my delight is in Thy commandments: O quicken me in Thy righteousness.

41 Let Thy loving mercy come also unto me, O

Lord: even Thy salvation, according unto Thy word.

42 So shall I make answer unto my blasphemers for my trust is in Thy word.

43 O take not the word

50 The same is my comfort in my trouble: for Thy word hath quickened

me.

51 The proud have had me exceedingly in derision yet have I not shrinked from Thy law.

52 For I remembered Thine everlasting judgments, O Lord: and received comfort.

53 I am horribly afraid: for the ungodly that forsake Thy law.

54 Thy statutes have been my songs: in the house of my pilgrimage.

55 I have thought upon Thy Name, O Lord, in the night-season: and have kept Thy law.

57 Thou art my portion, O Lord: I have promised to keep Thy law.

58 I made my humble petition in Thy presence with my whole heart: O be merciful unto me, according to Thy word.

59 I called mine own ways to remembrance: and turned my feet unto Thy testimonies.

60 I made haste, and prolonged not the time: to keep Thy command
