when we state, that every future Communication, from the same quarter, will be constantly welcome, and those so kindly promised more than usually acceptable.

We have received the Question put to us by our Correspondent Aliquis, "Whether the offices of Speaker of the House of Lords, and Lord Chancellor, are now by law inseparable; and if so, when they were thus united?" to which we can readily answer, that they are not inseparable; nor is there any law upon the subject: they are, indeed, by usage united, though, if the King pleases, they may be in different persons-both offices being appointed to by the King. And as the King appointed Lord Keeper Henly in the year 1757 to be Speaker, though he was a commoner; so it should seem he may appoint any other Lord, or even Commoner, as well as the Lord Chancellor or Lord Keeper, though it does not immediately occur that there has been an instance of a Commoner being so appointed, except a Lord Keeper, or Chancellor.

The anonymous letter, with the signature of X, dated from "Hatcham Manor," has been communicated to the Editor, who thanks the writer for the concern he expresses for the interest of this publication; and assures him, he himself feels no apprehension for the consequences which the writer supposes will follow from the length, or repetition of the article, which he has so strongly attacked, and censured. The Editor only requests of him to wait for the conclusion, before he passes sentence upon it, assuring him that he is under a mistake in what he says of the authorship.

It is not with any other feeling than a desire to convince Clio of the very great mistake he has fallen into if he thinks he writes poetry, that we beg of him to read the following extract from his tale; and we appeal to his conscience for our justification in not inserting his lines: "The tyrant exclaims, with heart-rending sigh,

Johnny, O, Johnny! I think I shall die. No sooner the words escape from the lips, Than down drops Maria in violent fits!!!"

We beg leave to return the poem entitled R to the author, assuring him that we feel ourselves compelled to refuse the insertion of a composition that would do neither him nor ourselves any credit.

We have received several ingenious Answers to Mr. Young's Arithmetical Question, but it will be evident that we cannot indulge ourselves in the insertion of them all-We have, however, given admission to one which appears to us to be the most accurate solution.

E. A. C. is not correct,

Habeas is one of the many who read without reflection, and decide without judg meet. As his recollection is so imperfect, he should have referred to Dr. Stringer's

address to the Editor of the European Magazine (Vol. LXX. page 393) on the Irish Extracts, where he would have read the following: "Though it is nothing more than a compilation intended for entertainment, combined, at least, with some portion of information, it may be useful to the traveller, the tourist, &c." And to that of the Scottish Descriptions, where it must be clear to every one who can read and understand the author's plan and intention was the same. We never sully our Miscellany by inserting malevolent impertinence. Judicious and candid controversy is desirable, and is admitted, but such remarks as Habeas has sent us would discredit our publication.

B.'s lines" On a Tear, &c." cannot be admitted as having any pretension to poetry.

F. B. is informed, that the European Magazine is no medium for personal re flections.

Arithmeticiana has our cordial thanks for her communication on the Arithmetical Question inserted in our last; but we had already received many more solutions than we could possibly insert, and had sent our selection to the press previously to the arrival of her favour.

Dr. Bateman's theory contradicts T. W.'s idea of the Virtues of Camphor; under this impression, we think it would not be seasonable to insert it with the Doctor's remarks.

The lines to the Memory of Sir Samuel Romilly are evidently the effusions of a kind heart. But they require a good deal of file work previous to their insertion.

We are sorry that want of room compels us to defer the insertion of the review of Dr. Yates's Visitation Sermon till our next.

We must apologize to many of our Correspondents for the omission of their favours this month, owing to the press of temporary matter.

F. B. and H. Mildred are inadmissible. ERRATA in our last.
