ACKNOWLEDGMENTS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

*THE Editor begs to announce to the readers of the E. M. that in the biographical article which accompanied the engrav. ing of the head of James Perry, Esq. in our last Number, there was a material omission, by an accident in the printing, of part of a sentence which not merely made the passage unintelligible in one sense, but, unfortunately, cast a reflection in another, totally undeserved on a work of established reputation.

The paragraph at the foot of p. 189, ought to have stood thus

"Mr. Perry was for several years editor of Debrett's Parliamentary Register, and continued editor of the Gazetteer till 1790; while by Mr. Woodfall's perseverance in filling the Morning Chronicle with Parliamentary Debates, to the exclusion of Advertisements, that paper ceased to be profitable to its proprietors, and they set it up to public sale. In the meantime, Mr. Woodfall undertook another paper under the title of the Diary, and Mr. Perry bought the Morning Chronicle."

The letter from A Merchant, has already been inserted in a public Journal.

H.'s recommendation of a Subject for a Portrait, is respectfully acknowledged, but the plan suggested is contrary to the principles of originality, on which the embellishments of the E. M. are produced.

Northumbria would have met with the same attention as she does us the favour to thank us for in a former instance, had her Muse been found equally propitious.

We beg to assure Mr. Joseph Crow, that it is with regret we feel ourselves at any time compelled to reject the communications of those who honour the E. M. with their selection; but that we may render it

worthy of their choice, we deem it incumbent upon us to give the palm of preference according to our humble powers of discri

mination.

The Review of Dr. Yates's Visitation Sermon and Mrs. Hooper's Poems, in our

next.

Whoever talks of everlasting death, of the grave, and of scorning the maxims of the wise, even in poetry, can be no fit Correspondent for the E. M.

The Misapplication of the Term Friend would, if inserted, he a gross misapplication of our pages. The paper is evidently written with much personality; and were the feelings of the writer as much corrected as his MS. he would be a fairer copy of a Christian; and a much more acceptable friend of the E. M.

Politeness! is really so uncouthly expressed, that, as far as we can make out the drift ot it, it must be altogether inadmissible, unless it be written in something like the English language. The hint has some meaning in it, if we have rightly devised it, but it requires a better medium.

The two Sonnets are written by a hand who can write better, but we fear not poetry.

As we wish to insert W.'s Review of Horne entire in a single Number, we have postponed it until we shall have more space unoccupied by previous matter.

T. W. and several other communications, are unavoidably deferred till our next, for want of room.

John Collins-B.-Edward HowardPiλo-M. 0.-S. E.-and W. D. 4. are received.

NEOTOINTS J. H. C. to Lucy-and D. D. are inadmissible.
