LONDON MARKETS,

Cotton

FROM FRIDAY, JULY 31, TO AUGUST 21, 1818.
COTTON.-The purchases of
this week are more extensive than for some
time preceding. The particulars are-25
Pernams 25. Id,; 62 Maranhams 23 d. to
233; 100 Carriacou 22 to 23d.; 300
Boweds 20d to 212; 1700 Bengals 9 to
11d.; 200 Surats 124d. to 124d.; and by
public sale this forenoon-87 Surinams
23 d. to 2s. 14d.; 74 Demeraras 23 d. to
2s.; 40 Grenadas 224d, to 22ģd.

request has been chiefly confined to that
description of refined. Loaves are getting
more plentiful, the prices are little varied.
-Molasses in demand at our quotations.
Foreign Sugars continue in good request;
an advance of 2s to 3s. per cwt. has been
paid on the last East India sale prices.

SUGAR.-The demand for Muscovades
during the week has been limited.-At the
close of to-day's market Muscovades may
again be stated fully Is. lower, and very

COFFEE continues to fluctuate greatly;
a decline of 6s. to 8s. took place on Tuesday
last. The sales of Wednesday went off
heavily at the reduction.-There were no

there were two sales; both went off with
uncommon briskness at 2s. per cwt. higher:
an extensive parcel of ordinary St. Domingo

sold at 155s.: the damaged 152s. 6d. and 153s. The Coffee market may to-day be stated to have greatly revived.

OILS.-There is little variation in the prices of Oil; the vessels from the Greenland fishery come in full ships: there are no accounts yet received of the Davis Straits fishing.-Rape Oil continues to improve.— In the other descriptions there is no variation.

RUM, BRANDY, and HOLLANDS.The demand for Rum appears improving; there is a great renewal in the request this forenoon, and the appearance of further improvement.-Brandies are also more in request-In Geneva there is no alteration.

TALLOW.-The prices of Pallow are little varied; the market has been heavy since our last; Yellow Candle 77s, and 77s. and 6d.: there is however some appearance to-day of a renewed inquiry. The town market is quoted 82s. which is Is. lower than last week.

FRIDAY, AUG. 7.

COFFEE.-The prices of Coffee declined 35. to 4s. on Tuesday. Yesterday a further depression of 2s. te 3s, took place, and the market might be stated very henvy at the decline, as the greater proportion of the sale was taken in, there being but few buyers even at the great reduction we have mentioned. This forenoon it was reported that very low prices had been submitted to by private contract, that the finest St. Domingo had been sold at 147s. ; fine ordinary Jamaica at 137s. The public sale went off however with much briskness, and recovered fully the depression of yesterday-good ordinary Jamaica realized 142, and good middling 156s. The coffee market is about 3s, lower than on Friday last, but the prices are certainly very fluctuating, and we be Jieve some holders who took a panic, sold greatly below our present quotations.

SUGAR.-The demand for Muscovades continued very limited early in the week, and the few sales effected were at a small reduction: towards the close of yesterday's market a few shipping houses appeared to buy, which gave some life to the trade: the purchases to-day are continued, but not on any extensive scale; the prices cannot be stated at any variation since this day week, The Refined market is becoming better supplied with goods, and the business done both for home trade and for shipping bas been considerable. Lomps have been in request for the Baltic trade; the prices of finer descriptions have rather given way, on account of the new supplies. Molasses are heavy of sale, and a shade lower. Foreign Sugars continue in request; the prices improving.

COTTON.-There have been very con siderable sales of Cotton: a great propor. tion of the Pernams were for exportation, The purchases since our last are-1200 Per

[blocks in formation]

RUM, BRANDY, and HOLLANDS. The demand for Ram has considerably subsided; no alteration in the prices can however be stated. A public sale of Brandy took place this forenoon, and went off much better than was expected; the best Cogniac sold 8s. 4d. and 8s. 5d,; the remainder 8. to 8s. 4d.; the prices may therefore be stated to remain unvaried. The request for Geneva continues limited.

TALLOW.-The prices of Foreign Tallow are little varied; the market is bowever exceedingly heavy: for arrival, all the year, 758.-Town Tallow is to-day quoted 81s. 6d. which is 6d, lower than last week,

FRIDAY, AUG. 14.

SUGAR.-There has been a very limited demand for Sugars all the week: the prices of Muscovades cannot be stated at any alteration since our last; though the weekly deliveries continue extensive, yet the buyers have evinced no eagerness to purchase. At the close of to-day's market there is however an appearance of a reviving demand, -There has been a good demand for Refined goods; the prices are fully supported, and in several instances a small advance has been realized on account of the market being still indifferently supplied; the parcels coming forward are however reported to be very considerable. In Foreign Sugars there is little variation; the demand appears to have greatly subsided. Tuesday a public sale of Havannah and Brazil Sugar was brought forward, scarcely any but the damaged was disposed ofmiddling white Havannah was taken in at 70s., and we believe only 64. was bid: fine white Brazil withdrawn at 65s, and 66s., and we believe no offers made near these prices.

On

COFFEE.-Coffee has taken a sudden rise; the advance since Thursday week is from 18s. to 20s, per ewt. There were only inconsiderable public sales brought forward on account of the languid demand,

and in consequence of this, and extensive shippers coming forward to, purchase, the prices have advanced with great rapidity. On Tuesday and Wednesday 3s. to 5s. and yesterday the demand became exceedingly brisk-for St. Domingo 162s. to 165s. were realized, and we believe since 166. has been paid, and this forenoon the holders are equally sanguine of not only maintaining the present prices, but even of obtaining a further considerable advance; the market is now within 2s, or 35, of the highest prices realized about a fortnight ago; the demand, however, is not quite so brisk as yesterday.

COTTON.-The sales of Cotton since our last have been extensive; the purchases are generally for exportation: for the home trade there is little business doing, as the spinners in the manufacturing districts still refuse to return to their employment. The sales for the week up to the evening of yesterday consist of-1100 Pernams, 2s. ld, to 2. 14.-100 Maranliams 25.-74 Spanish 19d.-140 Boweds 214d, to 2138.-2000 Bengals 941. to 12d.

OIL.There is little variation in the prices of Whale Oil; there are no accounts as to the success of the Davis Straits' fishery. -Sperm has been in demand, and is advancing. In Seed Oils there is no variation,-Gallipoli has been inquired after, and may be stated at a very considerable advance.

RUM, BRANDY, and HOLLANDS. There have been extensive speculations in Rum, chiefly on the calculation that the supplies will be very deficient; the prices of every description may be stated at the advance of 2d. to 3d. per gallon-Brandy is heavy, but without any variation in the prices.-Geneva continues in limited request, without any alteration in the currency.

RICE.-There have been very extensive purchases of Rice; Carolina, in bond, 47s. to 48s.; free sells low in proportion, 50s. East and ɔ̃ls. only realized for the latter. India Rice also in extensive request.

TALLOW. The prices of Foreign Tallow are a shade lower, and little doing. The Town market is to-day quoted 82s. which is 6d, higher than last week.

FRIDAY, AUG. 21.

COTTON.-The Cotton market appears improving; the sales since our last have heen extensive. The particulars are-1320 Pernams 28. 14d. to 2s, 2d. ; 646 Maranhams 2. to 2s. ; 40 Berbice 23d.; 95 Boweds 21 d. to 22d.; 40 Surats 121d.; 2280 Bengals 94d to 11 d. By public sale this foreneon-145 bags Demarara 23}d, to 2s. Ifd.; 131 do. Berbice 2044, to 28.; 24 do. Cariacou 23d, to 234d. ; a few St. Kitt's 194d.; Jamaica 24 d.

SUGAR.-The demand for Sugar has continued steady, and the business done,

particularly yesterday and this forenoon, has been very considerable; the prices gradually improve; an advance of is, to 2%. has been realised this week, and the holders evince confidence that the present currency will at least be fully maintained. There has been a great increase in the inquiries after Refined goods; the demand for Loaves of every description has been so considerable, that the prices are 1s. to 23. higher: crushed Sugar has also been in extensive request.-Molasses are 1s. to 2s. higher, and in brisk demand at the improvement. There is little variation in Foreign Sugar; yellow Havannah and Brazil descriptions continue to be inquired after.

COFFEE.-The Coffee market continues to fluctuate. Yesterday a public sale went off with some briskness, and the prices generally might be stated at a further advance of 25. per cwt. This forenoon there were no public sales, and the demand by private contract was very limited: the market may to-day be stated exceedingly heavy, owing to the heavy prompt to-morrow, a great part of the recent speculation being then due, and on which account several parcels have been offering cheap for money. The only purchase reported this forenoon (sold on the usual terms), is a parcel of St. Domingo at 166s.

OIL-In consequence of the favorable report of the Davis Straits' fishery received on Tuesday, the prices of Whale Oil have declined, though not materially, on account of the continuance of an extensive shipping demand, and having also become an article of speculation.-Seed Oils are improving.

TALLOW.-The prices of Tallow are improving; it was expected the favourable accounts of the fisheries would have had the effect of damping the demand for Tallow, and producing a depression of the prices; contrary to the general opinion, Tallow has been in good request, and the prices of Yellow Candle may be stated fully Is. higher. The Town market is to-day quoted 83. which is Is. higher than last week.

RUM, BRANDY, and HOLLANDS.— There has been an extensive business done in Rums; the prices are gradually improving; 200 puncheons Leewards U. P. were yesterday sold at our quotation; there is however less inquiry to day. The accounts from France state, that the vintage was not so favourable as at first represented; the prices of Brandy are in consequence a shade higher.-In Geneva there is no alteration,

SALTPETRE.-Since the sale at the India House Salt petre has become an article of great speculation; the prices are improving: a further advance is generally expected.

RICE.-There have been very extensive sales of Rice, and notwithstanding the great quantity brought forward by the India Company, it is a favorite article of specu lation; the prices are still improving: Ca rolina also in extensive inquiry.

FROM THE 27TH OF JULY, TO THE 24TH OF AUGUST, 1818, BOTH INCLUSIVE.
