LONDON MARKETS, JAN. 20, 1818.

COTTON-The late extensive sale at the India House has occasioned a temporary pause in the demand for Cotton; the prices are little varied; the holders have been asking an advance on the sale prices, but we believe it has in very few instances

been realized-100 bales Bengal were disposed of at prime cost. Another sale, it is reported, will take place in three weeks or a month; the arrivals are 1700 Surats, 4000 Bengals, and 450 Bourbons; more supplies are expected, particularly of Bengal Cotton.

The purchases since our last are confined to 200 Pernams, 2s. 1d. to 2s. 14d.; 30 Smyrnas, 17d, to 1704.; and a few prime Surinams, 2s. 24d.

SUGAR.-The deliveries of Sugars from the warehouses have materially increased since the commencement of the year, owing toa great revival in the country trade; the speculation in September and October advanced the price of Muscovadoes so rapidly that the trade kept their stocks more limited than usual; as the prices since have declined to moderate rates, it has greatly promoted the home consumption. The market for Sugars in the importer's hands was, however, rather heavy last week: the few purchases made were at prices a shade lower.

This forenoon the market is again heavy, and purchases may be made Is. lower, but scarcely any sales have been effected; the improvement of the country trade appears evident by the extens se deliveries from the warehouse last week; 3999 casks nearly exclusively for home consumption.

The stock of Sugar is now nearly the same as last year.

There has been little variation in the prices of Refined Goods; double and fine Hambro' Loaves have been much in request, and in several instances prices a shade bigher were submitted to; the demand for Lumps has rather given way; the prices are rather lower; few sales of crushed Sugars, have been effected; Molasses are heavy and declining.

The Refined Market has some appearance of giving way this forenoon-purchases may be made 1s, and 2. lower.

For Foreign Sugars there has been more enquiry for the finer descriptions higher prices are asked. The only sales, we believe, since our last are a few yellow Havannahs at 538.

CORN.-The winds for some time past have prevented all arrivals of Grain from the coast; the supplies of Corn have, in conséquence, been entirely confined to the land samples from Essex and from Kent; very fine Wheat was yesterday in request, but every other description, notwithstanding the limited supplies, were very heavy. In all kinds of Corn the sales were confined to the buyers for immediate consumption, who with reluctance complied with the advance that the sellers demanded. A rise of Is. in fine Oats was submitted to. Grey Peas, being also scarce, a similar improvement was realized; the sales were, however, very limited. In Clover Seed there was much briskness; both red and white seed advanced 28. to 3s. per cwt. Tares, being scarce and in demand, realized an improvement of 9, per bushel; if a change of wind takes place, very extensive supplies are looked for, and as the buyers are out of stock, it is anticipated there will be a very brisk market.

COFFEE.-There have been several en

quiries after Coffee. By private contract, last week, several rather extensive transactions were reported to have taken place, at rather high prices; some Cheribon realized 98s and 100-.; very high ra es were asked for Java Coffee, on account of its scarcity. There were no public sales brought forward last week, which was stated to be owing to the very small quantity of Coffee remaining in the importers' hands.

There was a public sale advertized for this forenoon, but it has been postponed until Thursday.

IRISH PROVISIONS, &c.-- The prices of prime provisions are likely to continue out of proportion high in comparison with the rates of parcels of infertor description; it is now ascertained that a great proportion of the new Beef is imperfectly cared, ow ing it is stated, to the unfavourable weather during the Beef curing season; it will probably have an effect on the future prices of the prime. The demand for Pork continues steady; the holders anticipate that the present currency will be maintained. New Bacon continues steady, though rather limited in request; the old is entirely neglected. The bolders of Butter continue sanguine of realizing higher prices.

FRUIT.-The only extensive parcel of Currants remaining in the importers' bands was last week purchased by the trade. A cargo of Raisins was brought forward last week; it consisted of 6380 baskets Deni, of a middling quality; the whole was withdrawn at 61s.

RICE. The prices of Rice are nearly nominal: in the present state of the market, the late prices for Carolina Rice could not be realized. The quantity of East India expected is reported to be very extensive.
