10821

This collection is not so much a volume of beautiful poems, as of histo rical documents, which prove the capacity of the Greeks to defend and govern their country. These songs form nearly their only annals during the last century and a half, and show that, during the whole of that period, they have been a brave and hardy nation, and that the accounts of their national character presented to us by a long succession of travellers, have been mainly erroneous."
