This book is replete with romantic and entertaining incidents, which fell within the knowledge of the author during an eighteen years' residence in Paraguay; and there is no other work which contains so full, so faithful, and so lively an account of the South American Tribes. The translation by Mrs Henry Nelson Coleridge is excellent. Southey, in his History of the Bra. zils, speaks in the following high terms of the author: "The Abipones have been in one thing fortunate above all other savages; for the history of their manners and fortunes by Martin Dobrizhoffer, a German Jesuit, who devoted the prime of his years to the task of converting them, and in old age, after the extinction of his order, found consolation in recording the knowledge which he had so painfully acquired, and the labours which had been so miserably frustrated, is, of all books relating to savage life, the most curious, and, in every respect, the most interesting."

1823 Bubb's diary" says Horace Walpole, "is curious, indeed, not so much from the secrets it blabs, which are rather characteristic than novel, but from the wonderful folly of the author, who was so fond of talking of himself, that he tells all he knew of himself, though scarce an event that does not betray his profligacy, and (which is still more surprising) that he should disclose the contempt in which he was held. However, with all its faults, the book is valuable." A new

1819

Dodwell's Tour in Greece is universally admitted to be a work of the most sterling merit, and the best executed of all the accounts yet published of this interesting country. Stevenson (in his Catalogue of Voyages and Travels) says that "it displays great research, aided and directed by much preparatory knowledge, sound judgment, and good taste;" and the late Dr. E. D. Clarke, than whom no man was more competent to give judgment on this subject, pronounced it "BY FAR THE BEST BOOK ON GREECE," and in a letter to the publisher requested that his name might be made use of, in recommendation of the work, in any way the most likely to promote its sale.

The printer of the first Edition, in 1594, was hung, drawn, and quartered; and the work, which was written to support the title of the Infanta in preference to that of King James I, was so rigidly suppressed, that it was made, High Treason even to possess a copy. Its real authors were Robert Parsons, the Jesuit, Cardinal Allen, and Sir Francis Englefield.
