"He was a writer of the first class, and excelled in almost every kind of prose composition. He reminds us of Bacon's multifarious knowledge, and the exuberance of his learned fancy; while his many-lettered diction recalls to mind the first of English poets, and his immortal verse, rich with the spoils of all sciences and all times. His narrative is excellent; and it is impossible more luminously to expose the details of a complicated subject, to give them more animation and interest, if dry in themselves; or to make them bear, by the mere power of statement, more powerfully upon the argument. In de. scription he can hardly be surpassed, at least for effect; he has all the qualities that conduce to it—ardour of purpose, sometimes rising into violencevivid, but too luxuriant fancy-bold, frequently extravagant, conception-the faculty of shedding over mere inanimate scenery the light imparted by moral associations. His invective is mingled with poignant wit, though often descending to abuse. No one can doubt that the enlightened men, in all ages, will dwell with delight upon the speeches of Mr. Burke. The extraordinary depth of his detached views, the penetrating sagacity which he occasionally applies to the affairs of men and their motives, and the curious felicity of expression with which he unfolds principles, and traces resemblances and relations, are separately the gift of few, and in their union probably without any other example."-Edinburgh Review.
