he was afraid, depraved his tafte, and perverted his difpofition. With refpect to the tendency of private theatrical entertainments, his Lordship doubted extremely whether they ever inculcate one fingle virtuous fentiment. He had known inftances where they had a contrary effect, and they ufually viti ated and debauched the morals of both fexes; the performers feldom retired from the entertainment but every Romeo knew the eftimate of his Juliet's virtue!

Sentence of death was paffed at the Old Bailey upon Charles Wiltshire, James Kenney, Esther Jane Hardy, James Gilthorp, and William Baker, for fundry highway robberies, &c.

La Chevaliere D'Eon's collection of Vauban's Manufcripts was fold for 500l.

Twelve thousand pounds was the purchase money for Cox's Museum.

22. The Seffions ended at the Old Bailey, when 19 capital conv ets, who had been refpited during his Majesty's pleasure, were pardoned on condition of their being tranfported to the Eastern Coast of New South Wales for the term of their natural lives; which condition being rejected by Thomas Jones, one of the faid convicts, he was ordered to be confined in a folitary cell until the fame shall be reported to his Majefty; 22 convicts were fentenced to be tranfported beyond the feas for the term of feven years; 6 to be imprifoned in Newgate; 9 in Clerkenwell Bridewell; 12 to be publicly whipped; and 2 transports were pardoned on condition of their being feverally imprifoned for the fpace of fix months.

Old Parr rivalled.-The following Infcription was copied from a Tombstone in Cacheu Church, near Cardiff, in the year 1740-Heare lieth the Body of William Edwds of the Cairy, who departed this Life the 24 of February, Anno Domini 1668, anno Etatis fui 168."

Mr. Duberly has gained 5000l. damages of General Gunning for crim. con. with Mrs. D. Lord Kenyon, on this occafion, expofed the conduct of the guilty party to merited contempt.

Dr. Haygarth, of Chester, having fuggested that the dreadful confequences arifing from the bite of a mad dog may be pre

vented by washing the wound with water as foon as conveniently may be the prac titioners in phyfic and furgery are requested to pay attention to the fuppofition. It may be remarked, that the fimple act of washing off the canine virus is all that is meant; fo that every perfon's reafon will direct him how to perform that office in the most effectual manner. In general an hour should be employed in the ablution, during which time the wound, whether lacerated or not, fhould be frequently fqueezed.

25. Information being laid before Sir Law rence Cox, the fitting Magistrate at the Ro tation-office in Litchfield-street, that a combination had taken place amongst the journeymen fhoe makers for the raising of their wages Is. on the making of a pair of boots, and 6d. on each pair of shoes, Sir Lawrence iffued out 170 warrants for apprehending the parties concerned, 21 of whom were brought before the Right Hon. Vifcount Galway, Sir L. Cox, and Mr. Shepherd, yesterday morning, at the above office; the report of which having fpread over the town, a multitude of shoe-makers, &c, in number upwards of 1000, affembled in Litchfield-freet in a riotous manner; on account of which Viscount Galway went to St. James's, where he reported the fame to the King; his Majesty ordered that a fufficient number of horse and foot foldiers be fent to prevent interruption, and that the battalion on guard fhould hold themselves in readiness, in case of being wanted; by which orders a troop of horse-guards and a company and 12 men on foot, went to the relief of the Magiftrate; on appearance of whom the mob difperfed, and the 21 pri foners, and one man who had behaved outrageously, were committed to Newgate for fix weeks under a ttrong guard.

A fcheme of a very fingular nature was detected lately at the Poft-office in Exeter. A gentleman dropping a letter into the letter-hole, was ftruck at not hearing it drop to the bottom, and on examination a cafe was difcovered to have been let down the hole by a ftring, and faftened on the outfide by a piece of watch-fpring; it was, when detected, full of letters, and, no doubt, contained bills to a very confiderable amount.
