41 Many a time did they provoke him in the 2 wil-3der-ness and grieved him in the desert. 42 They turned back, and tempt-3ed God: and moved the Ho-3ly One 5 in Israel.

2

43 They thought not of his hand and of the day when he delivered them from the 23 hand of 5 the enemy:

44 How he had wrought his miracles 23 in Egypt and his wonders in the field 5 of Zoan. 45 He turned their waters 2in-3 to 4 blood: so that they might not 23 drink of 5 the rivers.

4

46 He sent lice among them, and de-2voured 3 them up and frogs 3 to de-45 -45 stroy them.

4

2

47 He gave their fruit unto the cat-3er-pillar : and their labour 23 un-4 to 5 the grasshopper.

2

48 He destroyed their vines with hailstones : and their 2 mul- 3 berry-4 trees 5 with the frost.

49 He smote their cattle also 3 with hailstones : and their 23 flocks with 5 hot thunderbolts.

4

50 He cast upon them the furiousness of his wrath,* anger, displeasure, 23 and 'trouble and sent evil an-gels a- mong them.

45

4

51 He made a way to his indignation,* and spared not their soul from death: but gave their life over 2 to 3 the 'pes-5 ti- "lence:

3

52 And smote all the first- 3 born in Egypt: the most principal and mightiest in the 'dwellings 5 of 6 Ham.

4

53 But as for his own people, he led them forth 3 like sheep and carried them in the wilder-3ness 4 like 5a flock.

6

54 He brought them out safely, that they should 3 not fear and overwhelmed their 2 ene-3mies with

5 the sea. 6

:

55 And brought them within the borders of his 2 sanc-3tu-ary even to his mountain, which he purchased with 3 his 45 right hand.

2

56 He cast out the heathen 2also 3be-4fore them: caused their land to be divided among them for an heritage, and made the tribes of Israel to 23 dwell in 5 their tents.

:

57 So they tempted and displeased the most 23 high God and kept not his 1tes- 5ti-monies : 58 But turned their backs, and fell away like their fore-3 fa-1thers starting a-side 3like a 'bro

5ken bow.

59 For they grieved him with their 3hill-1altars : and provoked him to dis-pleas-3ure with their images.

he was wroth and Israel :

60 When God heard this, took sore dis- *pleasure 5 at 61 So that he forsook the tabernacle 23 in Silo : even the tent that he had pitched 3a-45 mong 6 men.

62 He delivered their power in- 2 to 3 cap-tivity : and their beauty in- 2 to 3 the 'ene-5 my's hand.

63 He gave his people over also un-to the 4 sword and was 2wroth 3 with his 5in- "heritance.

tion.

66 So the Lord awaked as one out of sleep : and like a giant 3re- 'freshed 5 with wine.

2

67 He smote his enemies in the hind-3er parts: and put them to a 3per-pet-5ual shame.

6

68 He refused the tabernacle of 23 Jo-seph and chose not the tribe 5 of 6Ephraim:

3

4

69 But chose the 2tribe 3 of 4 Judah: even the hill of 2 Si-3 on which 5 he loved.

:

70 And there he built his temple 23 on high and laid the foundation of it like the ground which he 23 hath made con- tinually.

71 He chose David also his 23 ser-4 vant and took him a-way 3 from the 45 sheep-folds :

72 As he was following the ewes great with young ones he took him that he might feed Jacob his people, and Isra-el his in-herit

ance.

2 4

73 So he fed them with a faithful and 23 true *heart and ruled them prudently 23 with all his power.

THE SIXTEENTH DAY.

Morning Prayer.

Psalm lxxix. Deus, venerunt.

GOD, the heathen are come into thine inheritance thy holy temple have they defiled,* and made Jerusalem an 23 heap 45 of stones.

6

2 The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the air and the flesh of thy saints unto the 23 beasts of the 6 land.

3 Their blood have they shed like water on every side 2 of 3 Je-rusalem: and there was no 3man to 4 bur-5 y 6them.

4 We are become an open shame to our 2en-3emies a very scorn and derision unto them that 3 are round 5a-bout us.

5 LORD, how long wilt thou be 23an-gry: shall thy jealousy burn like fire 5 for ever?

2

6 Pour out thine indignation upon the heathen that have not 3known 'thee and upon the kingdoms that have not called 'up-on "thy Name.

2

:

7 For they have de-2vour-3ed Jacob and laid 2 waste his 'dwell-ing- 6 place.

8 O remember not our old sins,* but have mercy

upon us, and 23 that soon for we are come to 'great mis- 5er- 6 y.

23

4

9 Help us, O God of our salvation,* for the glory 2 of 3thy Name; O deliver us, and be merciful unto our sins, for 3 thy 45 Name's sake.

10 Wherefore do the hea-3 then say: Where is 23 now 45 their God?

11 O let the vengeance of thy servants' blood 2 that is shed: be openly showed upon the heathen, in our sight.

5

12 O let the sorrowful sighing of the prisoners 2 come 3be-'fore thee according to the greatness of thy power, preserve thou those that are ap-23 point4 ed 5 to 6 die.

13 And for the blasphemy wherewith our neighbours have blas-2phe-3med thee reward thou them, O Lord, seven-fold 23 in-4 to 5 their "bosom.

2

*

14 So we, that are thy people, and sheep of thy pasture, shall give thee thanks for 'ever and will alway be showing forth thy praise from gener-2ation 3 to gen-5 er- ation.

Psalm lxxx. Qui regis Israel.

HE EAR, O thou Shepherd of Israel,* thou that leadest Joseph like a sheep show thyself also, thou that sittest up-2on 3 the Cher-5u-6 bim. 2 Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Ma-23 nas*ses stir up thy strength, and come, 3 and 45 help

6 us.

4

3 Turn us again, 23 O God show the light of thy countenance, and 23 we shall be whole.

2

4

4 O LORD God of hosts: how long wilt thou be angry with thy peo-3ple that 45 pray-eth?

3

6

5 Thou feedest them with the bread 3 of tears : and givest them plenteous-2ness of tears 5 to drink. 6 Thou hast made us a very strife un-to our *neighbours and our enemies 23 laugh us 5 to :

3

7 Turn us again, thou God of hosts: show the light of thy countenance, and we shall be 6 whole.

3

8 Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt : thou hast cast out the heathen, 23 and 5 ed it.

12 Why hast thou then broken down her hedge that all they that go by 23 pluck off her 6 grapes?

13 The wild boar out of the wood doth root it up and the wild beasts of the field 3de-45 vour it.

4

14 Turn thee again, thou God of hosts,* look 2down 3 from heaven behold, 23 and visit 5 this 6 vine:

15 And the place of the vineyard that thy right 2hand hath planted and the branch that thou madest so 23 strong for 5thy-"self.
