The Metrical Hymns which follow are mostly of an elevated and somewhat peculiar character; but from the irregularity of structure in the different stanzas, or from the great length of the lines, are quite unfit for singing in the common way, that is, to a regular tune or melody. But neither of these circumstances forms the slightest obstacle to chanting; on the contrary, they rather add to the interest of the performance. Thus by the introduction of Chanting, the way is prepared for the use of many hymns, superior in thought and poetic expression, but which on account of a broken rhythm cannot be sung with propriety in the ordinary way, and which have, therefore, been hitherto unavailable in public worship. The chanting of Blank Verse, also, is not only quite practicable, but as the few specimens inserted amongst the following selections will show, it may be made deeply interesting, and highly effective.
