Immediately after the fire is kindled in the morning, the damper in the smoke pipe is closed for the day; when the only escape for the heated smoke and gases is through the continuous tapering trunk, or radiator, terminating in the smoke pipe,-which is reduced to a small vent of two inches in diameter. The heated smoke and gases are thus compressed into the whole circuit of the trunk, and become wholly exhausted by radiation. The consequence is, that the formerly wasted fuel, which was lost by passing off in smoke and gases in a crude or unconsumed state, is here made available for generating heat.
