FOSSIL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

WITNESS

GERALD P. HUFFMAN, DIRECTOR, CONSORTIUM FOR FOSSIL FUEL LIQUEFACTION SCIENCE, UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY

Mr. YATES. The hearing will come to order. This is the continuation of hearings on the budget for Fiscal Year 1989. Today we have outside witnesses testifying, and the first of the witnesses is Mr. Huffman of the Consortium for Fossil Fuel Liquefaction.

Mr. Huffman, we will be glad to hear you. Your statement may be made a part of the record.

Mr. HUFFMAN. Thank you.

Mr. YATES. Mr. Huffman, we're glad to hear you.

Mr. HUFFMAN. Mr. Chairman, we are happy to be here. My name is Gerry Huffman. I am the Director of the Consortium for Fossil Fuel Liquefaction Science. Our consortium is a six member group that consists of five universities, the University of Kentucky, West Virginia University, Auburn University, University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Utah, and the Kentucky Energy Cabinet Laboratory.

With me today are representatives from several of those institutions. To my left we have Irving Wender, who is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh and is formerly the director of the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center. And to his left, George Fumich, who I am sure needs no introduction.

Mr. YATES. I've known him for many years.

Mr. HUFFMAN. To my right is Dick Bajura, who is the Director of Energy and Water Research Center at West Virginia University, and down at the end of the table is Henk Meuzelaar. Henk is the Director of the Biomaterials Profiling Center at the University of Utah.

It is well known to this Committee I'm sure that we have enough coal in this country to supply all of our energy needs for at least 400 or 500 years. Conversely, the world is going to run out of oil we are told in about 40 to 50 years. And, therefore, we feel that research that is aimed at converting coal to liquid fuels ought to be an important national priority.
