The achievement of such a work far exceeds the ambition or temerity of the editor of the present publication. The greater and more valuable portion of a long life has been expended by an intelligent individual in the compilation of topographical materials for the delineation of a single county; therefore, when local topography requires such lengthened exertion, the patience and perseverance of an individual, striving to produce a correct, though brief, outline of the more remarkable features of England and Wales must be permitted to deprecate criticism, and escape censure. The Editor founds all his hopes of approbation on the liberality of a discerning public.
