SCENERY IN THE HIGHLANDS OF SCOTLAND. 729

loveliest pleasure grounds, the noblest parks of European kings and princes, on which millions have been expended, yet they are all poor in comparison with the beauties so profusely laid before us by nature in the Highlands of Scotland. No other portion of the world, indeed, offers to view such grand and charming scenery so wholly enchanting and fascinating. We can well understand how the vivid imagination of the Gael, as he lingered in pensive moments among such scenes, had peopled the hills and glens, the moonbeams, dancing in the silvery spray of the torrent, with a shadowy world; how the fairy, the spirits, and the kelpies had sprung, Minerva-like, from his brain, and become inseparably entwined with his creed.

"Land of brown heath and shaggy wood;
Land of the mountain and the flood;
Land of my sires! what mortal hand
Can e'er untie the filial band
That knits me to thy rugged strand ?"
