PREFACE.

THE design of this, the third annual volume of the Legal Directory, is to aid professional or business men in the transaction of legal and other business in the various sections, by furnishing a List of able and entirely reliable Correspondents, the Times and Places of holding the State and Federal Courts, with the Laws of each State relative to the Collection of Debts, Execution and Acknowledgment of Deeds, taking of Depositions, etc. The work has been very carefully prepared, and no time, labor, or expense has been spared to insure its entire accuracy; and it is now of fered as the most reliable work of the kind ever presented to the public. Great care has been taken in the selection of attorneys, and the names are given as the result of information obtained from a private correspondence with nearly seven thousand bankers, cashiers of banks, and leading merchants in different sections of the country. During the past fall nearly all the larger cities have been visited by the Editor on business connected with the work, which has enabled him to verify the information concerning attorneys otherwise obtained. The parties named are recommended as attorneys of undoubted ability and worthy of entire confidence. Reference to the note at the head of the Index of Attorneys, will enable parties to transact business at places where no attorneys are named.

The Court Calendar gives the times and places for holding the State and Federal Courts, and has been prepared from official information. The officials of the Federal Courts, Registers in Bankruptcy, and a partial list of United States Commissioners, are also given. The counties and county seats of every organized county are named, with the judicial circuit or district to which they are assigned.

The synopsis of the Collection Laws, etc., given for each State, has been very carefully prepared by a leading attorney or law firm whose names, placed at the head of their respective compilations, are a sufficient guarantee of the law being correctly stated. Having a compiler in every State insures accuracy, and enables changes or corrections in the laws to be made promptly. The concise Synopsis of the Bankrupt Act, prepared by Orlando F. Bump, well and favorably known as the author of "Bump's Law and Practice in Bankruptcy," will be found of great con venience to business men who may have occasion to refer to it.
