all errors, and vouchsafe to restore them to their holy mother the Catholic and Apostolic Church: and for the faithless Jews, that he would take away the veil from their hearts, so that they also may acknowledge Christ Jesus as Lord!

ET us pray also for the heathen, that

he would cleanse their hearts from all iniquity; so that forsaking their idols they may turn to the living and true God, and to his only Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Let us pray. Let us bend the knee. Arise.

MERCIFUL God, who hast

O made all men, and hatest nothing

that thou hast made, nor desirest the death of a sinner, but rather that he should be converted and live; Have mercy upon all Jews, Turks, infidels, and heretics; and take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart, and contempt of thy Word; and so fetch them home, blessed Lord, to thy flock, that they may be saved among the remnant of the true Israelites, and be made one fold under one shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. R. Amen. After the Prayers, the Priest puts off his vestment, and taking from the altar the cross covered with a veil, he goes to the Epistle

corner, where he uncovers the top of it, and shows it to the people singing the Antiphon : Behold the wood of the cross.

Then the Deacons and Subdeacons join with him in singing the rest :

Whereon hung the Saviour of the

world.

O come ye, let us worship.

From thence the Priest proceeds to the right side of the altar, where he uncovers the right arm of the cross, singing a second time, Behold the wood, as before. Lastly, he goes to the middle of the altar, and uncovers the whole cross, singing a third time, Behold the wood, as before. After which he carries it to a place prepared before the altar, where he adores, first himself, and then the clergy and laity, all kneeling thrice on both knees and kissing the feet of the crucifix. What follows may be sung wholly or in part.

During the adoration, two chanters in the middle of the choir sing the following verse:

THE REPROACHES

(To be sung all kneeling).

O MY people, what have I done

unto thee? or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me. Because I brought thee forth from the land of Egypt, thou preparedst a cross for thy Saviour.

R. Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy and Immortal, have mercy upon

us.

V. Because I led thee through the

wilderness forty years, and fed thee with manna, and brought thee into a land exceeding good, thou preparedst a cross for thy Saviour.

R. Holy God.

V. What more could I have done unto thee that I have not done? I indeed did plant thee, O my vineyard, with exceeding fair fruit, and thou art become very bitter unto me: for vinegar mingled with gall thou gavest me to quench my thirst; and with a lance hast thou pierced the side of thy Saviour.

R. Holy God.

V. I scourged Egypt with his firstborn for thy sake: and thou didst deliver me to be scourged.

R. O my people, what have I done unto thee? or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me.

V. I brought thee out of Egypt, drowning Pharaoh in the Red Sea: and thou didst deliver me to the Chief Priests.

R. O my people.

V. I opened the sea before thee: and thou openedst my side with a spear.

R. O my people.

V. I went before thee in a cloudy pillar and thou leddest me before the judgment seat of Pilate.

R. O my people.

V. I rained manna upon thee in the

wilderness: and thou didst fall on me with swords and staves. R. O my people.

V. I gave thee to drink from the Rock of the water of salvation: and thou gavest me galland vinegar to drink. R. O my people.

V. I smote the kings of the Canaanites for thy sake: and thou didst smite my head with a reed.

R. O my people.

V. I gave thee a royal scepter: and thou gavest my head a crown of thorns. R. O my people.

V. I exalted thee unto great honor: and thou didst lift me up upon the gibbet of the cross.

R. O my people.

Antiphon. We venerate thy Cross, O Lord and praise and glorify thy holy Resurrection: for behold, through the Tree joy hath come to the whole world.

Psalm 67. Deus misereatur.

OD be merciful unto us, and bless us; * and show us the light of his countenance, and be merciful unto

us;

That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.

Let the people praise thee, O God; * yea, let all the people praise thee. O let the nations rejoice and be

glad for thou shalt judge the folk righteously, and govern the nations upon the earth.

Let the people praise thee, O God; * yea, let all the people praise thee.

Then shall the earth bring forth her increase; and God, even our own God, shall give us his blessing.

God shall bless us ; * and all the ends of the world shall fear him.

Antiphon. We venerate thy Cross, O Lord: * and praise and glorify thy holy Resurrection: for behold, through the Tree joy hath come to the whole world.

Verses. Crux Fidelis.

AITHFUL cross! above all other,

Fone and only noble tree!

None in foliage, none in blossom,
None in fruit thy peer may be :
Sweetest wood, and sweetest iron!
Sweetest weight is hung on thee.

SING

Hymn. Pange lingua gloriosi.
ING, my tongue, the glorious battle,
Sing the winning of the fray,
And above the Cross, the trophy,
Sound the high triumphal lay;
Tell of how the world's Redeemer
As a Victim won the day.

Faithful cross! above all other,
One and only noble tree!
None in foliage, none in blossom,
None in fruit thy peer may be.
