LESSON VI.

History of Adam's Posterity, till the Deluge.

From B. C. 3875, to B. C. 2348.

FROM GENESIS V.

[CAIN, after the death of his brother, went forth from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt on the east of Paradise, and there he built a city, and called it after the name of his son Enoch. Among his posterity was Lamech, who was also a murderer, and was the first who had more wives than one. Lamech had three sons and a daughter by his two wives. The name of the first son was Jabal, who was the first of those who dwell in tents, and have cattle; the name of the second was Jubal, who was the father of them that play on the harp and the organ and the name of the third was Tubal Cair, who was the first workman in brass or copper, and iron.

After the departure of Cain to the eastward of Paradise, God gave to Adam and Eve another son instead of Abel, whom Cain slew, whose name was Seth. Adam was 130 years old when Seth was born, and he lived afterwards 800 years, so that his age at the time of his death was 930 years. Seth lived to the age of 912 years. The name of his eldest son was Enos, who lived 905 years. The eldest son of Enos was Cainan, who lived 910 years. The eldest son of Cainan was Malaleel, who lived 895 years. The eldest son of Malaleel was Jared, who lived 962 years. The eldest son of Jared was Enoch, who lived 365 years, and did not die, but was translated to heaven without dying.-Enoch walked with God and pleased him, which was the reason of his not dying, but being removed to heaven. Enoch was a prophet, and the Apostle Jude has preserved a prophecy that he delivered. In his epistle in the New Testament, Jude says:] 'Now of these [wicked persons] Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, Behold the Lord cometh with thousands of his

saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to reprove the ungodly for all the works of their ungodliness, which they have ungodlily committed, and for all the hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against God.' [The eldest son of Enoch was Methuselah, who lived 969 years, his age being the longest on record. The eldest son of Methuselah was Lamech, who lived 777 years. The eldest son of Lamech was Noah. When Noah was 500 years old, he had three sons, whose names were Shem, Ham, and Japheth.]

From Psalm xc.*

LORD, thou hast been our refuge from generation to generation. Before the mountains were brought forth, or the earth was formed, and the world; even from eternity to eternity thou art God. Thou makest man return to destruction, and sayest, Return, ye children of Adam.

For a thousand years in thy sight are as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. Thou makest them to flow away. They are as a sleep. In the morning man is changed like grass In the morning he flourishes, and grows up; in the evening he is cut down, and withers. For we are wasted away by thine anger, and confounded by thine indignation. Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. We spend our years like a tale. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; but if by reason of strength, they be fourscore years, yet is their multitude labour and sorrow, for the cutting off hastens on, and we

fly away. Who knoweth the power of thine anger? Even as thy fear is thine anger. So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. Return, O Lord, how long, and have compassion on thy servants. O satisfy us early with thy mercy, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days

The Deluge.

B. C. 2348.

FROM GENESIS VI. TO VIII.

AND God saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the day. And the Lord repented that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him inwardly. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created, from the face of the earth, both man and beasts, and creeping thing, and fowls of the air, for it repenteth me that I have made them. But. Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Noah was a just and perfect man in his generations: and Noah walked with God. And the earth was corrupt before God; and the earth was filled with violence. And when God had seen that the earth was corrupted, for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth, he said to Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; the earth is filled with violence through them, and I will destroy them with the earth: make thee an ark of cypress wood. Little rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and thou shalt pitch it within and without. And thus shalt thou make it: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. Thou shalt make a window in the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish the top of it; and the doors of the ark shalt thou set in the side of it: with lower, second and third stories shalt thou make it. And behold I will bring the waters of a great flood upon the earth, to destroy all flesh wherein is the

breath of life under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die. But I will establish my covenant with thee, and thou shalt enter into the ark, thou and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. And of every living thing, of all flesh, two of every kind shalt thou bring into the ark, that they may live with thee: they shall be male and female. Of fowls according to their kind, and of beasts according to their kind, and of every creeping thing that creepeth on the earth, according to its kind :-two of every sort shall go in with thee that they may live. Thou shalt take unto thee of all food that may be eaten, and thou shalt lay it up with thee, and it shall be food. for thee and for them.

And Noah did according to all things that God commanded him. So did he. And the Lord said unto him, Go in, thou and all thy house, into the ark, for thee have I seen upright before me, in this generation. Of every clean beast, thou shalt take to thee seven and seven, the male and his female; and of beasts that are not clean, two by two, the male and his female; of the fowls of the air also seven and seven, the male and his female, that seed may be kept alive upon the face of the whole earth. For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth. And Noah did according to all that the Lord commanded him. And Noah was six hundred years old, when the waters of the flood overflowed the earth. And Noah went in, and his sons, and the wives of his sons with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth. In the six hundredth year of the life of Noah, in the second month, in the seventeenth day of the month,
