FOREWORD

Prepared for use, and not merely for the purpose of having “something to sell," in putting out this edition of Annotated Codes the editor has not been able to reach the schedule of appearance announced by the publisher. Being firmly convinced of the wisdom and usefulness of the old adage that "whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well," the editor declines to be "rushed," either by the anxiety of the publisher or the impatience of subscribers.

A new vein in the law is opened up which has never heretofore been sought to be "worked" in California-or in any other state, for that matter-which is yielding a rich return in practical usefulness to a busy profession.

Labor of research is great, the work tedious and timeconsuming the matter cannot be "cut" from syllabi or "cribbed" from old works-but the "output" is thought to be well worth the labor and time expended. The publisher and the public must "compose themselves with patience," allowing adequate time and opportunity for doing the work well; undue haste would defeat the end sought-something new, useful, and better than anything heretofore given to the profession in this state.
