Excerpt from Sacred Songs of the World: Translated From One Hundred and Twenty Languages

Fifty years ago, in the Preface to his Poetry and Poets of Europe, ' the poet Longfellow wrote: Other languages I leave to some other hand, hoping that ere long a volume may be added to this which shall embrace all the remaining European tongues.' That Collection contained a large number of translations from 'the six Gothic languages of the North and the four Latin languages of the South.' Including a few representations of different stages of the same tongue, the following pages contain renderings from forty-eight European, thirty-nine Asiatic, twelve African, thirteen American and eight Oceanic languages.

The Collection is the fruit of many years' study of Comparative Theology and of the Poetry of civilized and uncivilized races, and has been prepared with the double purpose of promoting both these studies.
