America's rich heritage of advocating civil disobedience is put into sharp focus in this collection of 46 crucial documents. Arranged chronologically within topical groupings, the selections span the years 1657 to 1973. The range of documents is wide: besides sermons, essays, and speeches, there are two poems, a chapter from a novel, excerpts from a play, a transcript of a public protest meeting, and two segments of testimony given before Congress.
