Sobre o autor (2000)

Born in Seville, Spain, in 1898, poet Vicente Aleixandre was a member of Spain's Generation of 1927. He survived a civil war bomb attack on his house, only to have his work banned by government censors for nearly five years after the war. His early poetry, typified by Pasion de la tierra (1935), is hermetic in its surrealism, but his later work, such as Historia del corazon (1954), is more accessible and addresses the problems of postwar Spanish society with compassion and human solidarity. As one of the few poets to remain in Spain after the Spanish Civil War, Aleixandre was an inspiration to younger poets and encouraged their work. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1977. In 1984, Aleixandre died in Madrid of a kidney disorder.
